With the news that Billy Wagner will need TJ surgery the Mets will need a new closer next year, more then likely at 37 y/o and his contract up Wagner's Mets career is over. As I posted earlier today the Mets will try to find away through the rest of the season but will need to find a permanent solution for next season. The Mets could look at in-house solutions and while there is no true established closers they may turn out to be just as good as the available free agents. The idea of John Maine being used in the pen has been bantered about since his days in Baltimore, if the Mets decided to acquire a starter Maine would make a very good closer. Both Muniz and Kunz were drafted as potential closers and while they haven't looked ready, by spring training especially if they play winter ball it's possible they could take over.
