Earlier this week, the Washington Nationals placed their overpriced shortstop, Cristian Guzman, on waivers. Earlier today, the Boston Red Sox put a waiver claim for the infielder. This season with the Nationals, Guzman has a .315 average in 92 games. He has five home runs and 39 RBI. I've liked Guzman, but his price tag scares me ($16 million over the next two years). According to Baseball-Reference.com, Guzman's stats most closely resemble Fernando Vina's, not really something to be proud of, but he has been hitting very well the last 2-3 seasons. With the Red Sox's bats struggling mightily recently, Guzman might be a spark that could ignite an offensive fire under the Sox. The past three seasons, Guzman has been hitting .328 in 2007, .316 in 2008, and .315 this season. However, Guzman's past defense has scared me.
