Rich "Goose" Gossage is vying for the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown for the ninth time….and he is the front runner to finally get in when the voting is tabulated today. Gossage's 22-year major league career includes 310 career saves — mind you, in the three-inning save era — when the word "closer" was not in the vocabulary of these dudes. They were the reliever…no "set-up" man….no one-inning stints…
This is a no brainer! If the basis of your decision is saves only, you're strongly mistaken. Some interesting numbers below to ponder, if you're comparing this reliever to the all-time saves leader, closer Trevor Hoffman, who will undoubtedly, and deservedly so, be inducted into the Hall of Fame in an early ballot, if not the first.
