PLAYERS: Pat Venditte
TEAMS: New York Yankees
I've never seen Pat Venditte pitch. Frankly, it's bucket list material. But I'm starting to lose hope that he'll ever do it for the Yankees. Venditte is the only pitcher in pro baseball who can throw with both hands. That, in itself, makes him arguably the greatest athlete in the game, if not the most coordinated and sophisticated person in professional sports. He must have the mind of an octopus. Think about it: He pitches with both hands. He is one of a kind. And I can't help but think if he was in any other organization, Venditte would have at least made it to The Show by now, if not just for the novelty effect. The Yankees drafted him in the 2008 20th round, out of Creighton University. Right off the bat, baseball screwed him. Some meathead executive ruled that Venditte must choose which arm to use, giving switch-hitters the advantage of making their adjustment. Yeesh. What an idiotic decision. Seriously, how many switch-pitchers are there? You would think the...

Robinson Cano Won't Budge From $310 Million

It wasn’t long ago that there were reports saying Robinson Cano wasn’t actually seeking $310 million. People said that he and his agent (Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports) had offered a 10-year, $310 million contract to the Yankees early in the summer, hoping that they’d overspend for the second baseman. Since that hadn’t happened, people thought that Cano would start from the...

Alex Rodriguez Storms Out of Arbitration Hearing, Delivers Classic Rant

Tell em why you mad son? “This is ridiculous,” Rodriguez is said to have shouted after Horowitz issued his ruling shortly before noon at MLB’s offices on Park Ave. Rodriguez then pointed his finger at Manfred, who directed baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic suspected of being a source of supply of illegal PEDs to ballplayers, and said “You know you’re...

Yankees president Randy Levine grilled by Alex Rodriguez's lawyer

It wasn't exactly an F. Lee Bailey cross-examination, but Alex Rodriguez’s top defense lawyer put Randy Levine on the stand Tuesday in the star-crossed player’s contentious arbitration hearing at Major League Baseball’s Park Ave. offices and questioned him for about 10 minutes on a variety of subjects. According to a source familiar with the hearing, Joe Tacopina revisited...

Yankees President Tells Robinson Cano to ‘Get a Little More Realistic,’ Says Team Not Willing to Pay Slugger $300 Million

The Yankees have two words for Robinson Cano: get real. After news that Cano is not budging off his request for a 10-year, $310 million contract in free agency, Yankees president Randy Levine confirmed that the two parties are still quite far apart in salary talks. “We want Robbie back; we think Robbie is terrific,” Levine told ESPNNewYork.com on Tuesday. “But we have no interest...

MLB-Japan league snag puts star in limbo

Robinson Cano is the best free-agent position player on the market. His representatives -- including entertainment mogul Jay-Z -- are deep enough into their offseason planning that they had a dinner meeting with the New York Mets on Monday. Masahiro Tanaka is Cano's counterpart among pitchers, the most sought-after arm on the open market ... except that his market isn't...

Rodriguez resumes arbitration hearing at MLB headquarters

Showing little sign of the illness that KO'd him from a scheduled meeting with nemesis Major League Baseball Friday, Alex Rodriguez emerged from a black SUV Monday morning at 9 sharp, ready to resume his contentious arbitration hearing at baseball's Park Avenue offices, where his legal team opened its defense. "Hi guys, how are you? I'm excited to get back in there...

Did the New York Yankees Have a Successful Season?

In 2013 the New York Yankees finished in third place, missing the playoffs for just the second time since 1995. As in 2008, the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays were the playoff representatives from the AL East.  The Yankees, who finished at 89-73 in 2008 and 85-77 this year, had good-not-great seasons which, depending on the division and year, could have been enough to punch...

Empire Prez To Cano And Jay Z: "Get Real!"

This is going to be so much fun. The Bronx Zoo is back—in full-fledged lunacy! Yankee President Randy Levine called out his free-agent second baseman Robinson Cano (and by extension his buffoon "agent" Jay Z) with the following: "We want Robbie back; we think Robbie is terrific. But we have no interest in doing any 10-year deals and no interest in paying $300 million...

Mets, Jay Z hold secret meeting about Cano

Robinson Cano a Met? It sounds outlandish on the surface, but Cano put his best man on the job Monday night. Yes, it turns out Jay Z is as hands-on as promised. So hands-on he’s willing to shop his client across the RFK Bridge into Flushing. The hip-hop impresario joined Mets COO Jeff Wilpon, general manager Sandy Alderson and assistant general manager John Ricco for dinner at...
