Found November 03, 2013 on New York Mets Report:
New York Mets COO Jeff Wilpon has subsequently modified his statement about his team having only four core players, later adding Daniel Murphy, Travis d’Arnaud and Bobby Parnell. It’s not a substantial increase, but highly revealing in two main aspects. First, it highlights the areas where the Mets are weak and need building. That would be two starters, bullpen depth, first base, shortstop and the outfield. By my count, that’s 18 players. WILPON: Revealing comments. Of course, the Mets won’t be able to turn over their roster by that much, but there will undoubtedly be significant changes. Realistically, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Aaron Harang will be gone, and with a reluctance to tap into their minor league system for starters until at least June and Jenrry Mejia not certain to be ready, that’s a high priority for Sandy Alderson. Parnell isn’t a given for spring training, leaving the entire bullpen to reconstruct. Vic Black could move into the closer role, but most everything else is to...

Eric Young Jr. Is Not A Good Reason To Trade Daniel Murphy

In recent days, rumors have heated up that the Mets are considering trading Daniel Murphy so they can install Eric Young Jr. as their everyday second baseman. As I see it, there are two significant problems with this idea. The first is that Daniel Murphy is one of the few things about the Mets that isn’t completely broken, and getting rid of him would add another entry to the list...

Is Kevin Plawecki A Top Five Prospect For The New York Mets?

Baseball America (B.A.) released their latest issue which not only featured Noah Syndergaard on the cover, but also listed their new top ten prospect rankings for all the teams in the NL East. The Mets had a bunch of names we have all seen on these top prospect lists before–Syndergaard, Travis d’Arnaud , Wilmer Flores, Brandon Nimmo and Gavin Cecchini. The one choice that took...

Mets Gambled And Lost On Johan Santana; End Era By Buying Out Contract

The New York Mets took care of business and officially parted ways with often-injured Johan Santana when they paid a $5.5-million buyout Friday, and the classy left-hander, who always wanted to do more – sometimes to his detriment – did the same and thanked the franchise and its fans for their support. In a statement, Santana said: “I want to thank the Mets organization, my...

Lagares Is Off To A Sizzling Start In Winter Ball

It’s only been six games for Juan Lagares who is working on his bat in the Dominican Winter League, but so far the early results have been incredible for the young center fielder. Last night, Lagares went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases to raise his average to .375 for the season with a .777 OPS. The Dominican native has hit in six straight games for Las Aguilas and has...

Underrated RHP Logan Verrett Could Pitch His Way To Mets In 2014

Logan Verrett was tabbed as having the “Best Slider” in the Mets system by Baseball America last week in their annual “Best Tools” feature. The 23-year old righty finished the 2013 season with a 4.25 ERA in 146.0 innings. He won 12 games and struck out 132 batters over that span and held opposing hitters to .249 batting average against him. Verrett’s best month was in...

Roberto Clemente, Branch Rickey and the New York Mets

The new GM was cool and manipulative in his transactions, meticulous with his records, formal in his speech, stingy with his money, interested equally in a player’s psychological disposition and his ability to learn an elusive hook slide. This GM’s world could be studied, categorized, and explained. Good things did not fall upon people, or baseball clubs, by accident. Worthwhile...

The Mets need to sign Shin-Soo Choo

This off-season is without question an incredibly important one for the Mets. It’s essentially the turning point for this franchise during the Alderson era, whether or not the team officially recognizes it as such. Large, crippling contracts are coming off of the books and the farm is in the process of churning out high-ceiling pitching talent the likes of which most Mets fans...

Trades that shaped the Mets: The 1960s

We’ve encountered a lot of speculation lately about which players the Mets should obtain this off-season.  The team must assess their areas of strength and weakness (both at the major and minor league levels) and decide how to address those areas. This is, of course, nothing new.  The Mets actually dealt the first player they ever drafted after only 23 games. In 1962, the Mets...

MMN Exclusive: Interview with Mets Outfield Prospect Joe Tuschak

When thinking about players that can help the Mets in the future, the key for a scout is looking for those that have an ability to produce within the system and eventually develop into impact players. Even if it may take a few years to reach their full potential, the risk is worth the wait. The Mets took that risk when they signed outfielder Joe Tuschak in the 6th round of the 2011...

Anyway the list is: Noah Syndegaard Travis d’Arnaud Rafael Montero Dominic Smith Kevin Plawecki Wilmer Flores Amed Rosario Brandon Nimmo Gavin Cecchini Jake deGrom Interestingly, only3 of the 10 players on the list are pitchers, and all three are right handers...

Montero’s Pinpoint Control Will Define His Career

Baseball America awarded Rafael Montero the distinction of best control in our system — surprising? Not at all. If you’ve been keeping tabs on my crazy rambling, I love pitchers that work by commanding their arsenal with expertise. It seems that as the days go on, more and more players are able to throw the ball hard — but can they pitch? The ones that can, of course, turn...

Lagares Is Tearing It Up In The Dominican League

It’s only been six games for Juan Lagares who is working on his bat in the Dominican Winter League, but so far the early results have been incredible for the young center fielder. Last night, Lagares went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two stolen bases to raise his average to .375 for the season with a .777 OPS. Noah Syndergaard for Jose Bautista?

The Mets have multiple needs if they have any hope of being a contender in 2014 as we all know, but certainly at the top of that list is the acquisition of a legitimate power hitter to hit behind David Wright. While I certainly have no inside information on the subject, let’s just suppose that the Blue Jays realize that sending Noah Syndergaard to the Mets in the R.A. Dickey deal...

The Top Ten Prospects in the NL East

Coming off the coattails of Baseball America breaking down the top ten prospects from every team in the NL East, we take a look at the top ten prospects from the NL East. There were a couple of surprises when looking at Baseball America’s list of the top ten Mets’ prospects, most notably Kevin Plawecki jumping to No. 5, and players like Cesar Puello not cracking the top 10. You...

Atlanta’s Paul Maholm Tops List Of NL East Free Agents That Could Entice Mets

Let’s face it, the New York Mets adding Giancarlo Stanton will not happen any time soon. Miami general manager Dan Jennings told ESPN Stanton isn’t going anywhere. “Mr. Stanton is not available,’’ Jennings said. “He will be in right field at Marlins Park on Opening Day. We are building around him.’’ Don’t underestimate the Marlins’ ability to build quickly, evidenced...
