At the end of the 2011 season, Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle talked about the offense and the need to upgrade and improve going into 2012. At the Winter Meetings, he discussed how big a piece Pedro Alvarez can be in doing so.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right handed pitcher Jeremy Hefner for assignment in order to make room for Yamaico Navarro on the 40-man roster. Hefner was originally claimed by the Pirates on November 18th, after being designated for assignment by the Padres. The Pirates will have ten days to trade, waive, or release Hefner. If he clears waivers, the team can assign him to AAA.
The 2011 Rule 5 draft takes place tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM EST. The Pittsburgh Pirates have made a pick in each of the last four drafts under Neal Huntington. In order to continue that trend, they will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster before tomorrow’s draft.
We’ve talked a lot about the Rule 5 draft on this site, mostly from the perspective of who the Pirates need...
The Pittsburgh Pirates wrapped up a busy week at the Winter Meetings by taking four players in the Rule 5 draft, three from the AAA phase of the draft. During the week they added two major league free agents, made one trade, and cut ties with Ross Ohlendorf. Here is a list of the players added, dropped, traded, or just generally involved in a transaction this week.
In one of the more personally amusing incidences of online post-scheduling this winter, I wrote a preview of the Pirates' off-season for The Hardball Times that went live on Wednesday morning, hours before the club finalized a contract with Nate McLouth, signed Erik Bedard, and traded for Yamaico Navarro. These sorts of things are unavoidable, of course, but it's quite amusing...
The Pittsburgh Pirates may be close to a deal with free agent left hander Erik Bedard, according to Marc Brassard (h/t to Blitzburgh Blog for the find).
The report is written in French, as is an article translated from a news site in Canada. The translation is a bit rough, but both seem to say that Bedard will sign for $4.5 M plus incentives, and that a deal could be reached today...
Tony Watson, who made large strides while on the mound at the University of Nebraska, has made a few more- this time at the major league level with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Manager Clint Hurdle gives his thoughts on how Watson has dealt with the transition, and what he expects of him heading into 2012.
Pounders has been traded to Kansas City for Yamaico Navarro.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired infielder Yamaico Navarro from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right handed pitcher Brooks Pounders and infielder Diego Goris. The Royals were shopping Navarro to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for a Rule 5 pick. The Pirates will announce a corresponding move tomorrow to...
The Pirates have released Ross Ohlendorf, tweets MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch. The 29-year-old had been a Pirate since the Yankees traded him to Pittsburgh in 2008's Xavier Nady/Jose Tabata deal.
Ohlendorf was coming off a dismal 2011 campaign in which he posted an 8.15 ERA in nine starts for the Pirates. He was arbitration eligible, and MLBTR's projected a salary...
The Pittsburgh Pirates today selected infielder Gustavo Nunez off the Detroit Tigers’ Triple-A Toledo
roster with the eighth pick in the annual Rule 5 Draft.
The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have agreed to terms with outfielder Nate McLouth on
a contract for the 2012 season.
Here's the latest from Albert Pujols' former division...
"A handful of teams" are interested in Brewers reliever Francisco Rodriguez, reports FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Though Rodriguez's 2012 salary is projected as around $13MM through arbitration, the Brewers don't necessarily plan to trade him until they know if Rodriguez is content being...
