While Billy Wagner's comeback attempt may have ended yesterday, it seems that John Maine still has an outside chance of returning this season, perhaps in a bullpen role.

Maine had hoped to begin throwing tomorrow, but those plans were pushed back until next Monday, a delay that cast further doubt upon a return this season. Maine has not picked up a baseball since he was placed on the disabled list Aug. 25 with a bone spur in his right shoulder and he will spend this week trying to strengthen the area with arm exercises.

With such a long layoff, Maine had no idea how long it would take him to get back into pitching shape, but it seems that his only shot would be in the bullpen. "I was miserable when I was pitching," he said, "but this [stinks]."

I know the thinking is right but Maine is used to throwing every fifth day!

If Maine is healthy enough, I have no problem with it. Especially if he can close some games out!
