The Milwaukee Brewers traded Zack Greinke to the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, and that could make it more likely that James Shields ends up leaving the Tampa Bay Rays.

Rays manager Joe Maddon acknowledged the obvious Friday: With Greinke off the market, the demand for Shields may increase in the final days before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

"You would think that might turn more of the focus on our guy, there's no question. I can't deny that," Maddon said Friday before the Rays' 3-1 loss to the Angels. "But at the end of the day, I still believe Shieldsy is going to be a Ray after the trade deadline is over.

"All this conjecture does occur, and there's reasons why they're pointing at James. But I still believe in my heart of hearts that it's not going to happen and it's going to move on and we're going to be normal and he's going to pitch like he can over the last two months of the season."

Shields maintained he is not distracted by or concerned with the speculation, and that he is focused on winning for the Rays, the only team he has been with.

"We go through this every single year," he said. "You hear your name pop up, it's kind of interesting to people, but for us as players, we kind of deal with it, go along with the flow, and whatever happens is going to happen."
