I absolutely hate this new MLB wild card scenario. I think it’s utter hooey, and I’m sorry for being so vulgar. It’s important to remember, too, that I’m a classy and intelligent St. Louis Cardinals fan, and I still think this wild card play-in game is crap. Yes, the rule is the only reason that my underachieving team is even playing for a chance to be in the playoffs today, and I still hate it. I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I HATE IT.It’s simply not fair to the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, and Baltimore Orioles. And don’t give me none of that “Well it wouldn’t have been fair for the Rangers or Orioles and their 93 wins either” because they still would have had a play-in game, and I’m damn grateful for the convenience of their matching records, because otherwise my argument would have sucked more than it probably already does. By midnight tonight, we’re going to have two upset fan bases, and the AL fans will really deserve to be pissed. The NL fans, perhaps not as much. Either ...

Game Picks - Friday: October 5, 2012

Bud Selig's dream comes true today as the two wild card games are set to be played. The "one and done" format means do or die for each of the four teams as the losers will go home and the winners will go on to play the best teams in each league for the division series. And whether or not you are a fan of the new proceedings, the games should be filled with drama and...

Cardinals recap: St. Louis Cardinals 6 Atlanta Braves 3

The St. Louis Cardinals were fortunate enough to qualify for the playoffs this season thanks to Bud Selig's new "Wild Card" format.  After beating the Braves 6-3 on the road in front of some raucous fans at Turner Field in Atlanta, it is obvious that the new system did not take long to turn "wild." A curious eighth inning call led to Braves manager Freddi...

Dugout Digest - what homefield advantage?

I know I said we'd have immediate recaps of every playoff game, but quite frankly, after last night's Braves-Cardinals game, the only color I saw was red...and not the red from the 50,000 waving tomahawks at Turner Field or on the Cardinals hats. Red as in pure, unmitigated rage that Bud Selig's pet wild card game would end up *exactly* how the negative nancies portrayed...

2012 MLB Playoffs - Wild Card

It's that time of year again where the MLB Playoffs take place. And for the first time, we have something different. When Bud Selig added another wild card team in each league, it made things all the more interesting as we saw in the races down the stretch. And now, Selig's plan takes to fruition as the 2012 MLB Playoffs kick off tonight on TBS. Here's the breakdown with...

Infield Fly Rule Ends Chipper Jones' MLB Career in Trashiest Way Possible (Photos)

MLB commissioner Bud Selig was on his couch Friday night, his popcorn bowl tucked firmly beside him, turning up the volume as his latest brain child -- two wild card playoff games that would add immeasurable intrigue to baseball's postseason -- played on the television set before him. Within hours, though, Selig (who was not contacted for confirmation of his whereabouts Friday...

So What's the Scenario?

"Funny how falling feels like flying, even for a little while."- Bad BlakeBud Selig should be ashamed of himself. Losing the One Game Playoff is cruel to emotionally invested baseball fans. If what happened to the Braves had happened to the Yankees, Billy Crystal would be in Bud Selig's office shouting that this isn't fun, and it isn't funny. As better writers...

Daily Friar 10.5.12

As the playoffs get started, the Padres offseason begins. I wouldn't expect signinficant news to come out in the next few weeks, but I will keep my eye out for anything to come. It's kind of frowned upon to make breaking news during the playoffs because Bud Selig wants all eyes on the winning teams. So even though the season is over, the Daily Friar carries on each day even...

NL Wild Card Matchup Preview

I, for one, am in favor of the 1 game Wild Card shootout.  It didn’t seem right that a Wild Card had the same rights and privileges of the Division winners (minus home field, which in baseball is minimal). Seemed like every other year, there’d be a Game 163 (to settle a regular season tie) that created a huge Game 7 feel right off the bat, really helped fans get in the October...

MLB Close To Reaching 75 Million Mark In Attendance This Year

Facebook.com/MLB Major League Baseball enjoyed one of its most successful years in 2012 as it drew close to 75 million fans to its ballparks during the regular season. Officially, MLB announced on Oct. 4 that a total of 74,859,268 fans walked through the turnstiles to see the 30 ball teams in action. It was the highest attendance figure since the 2008 season and the fifth-best in...

Column: Bad call, bad idea for one-game playoff

(Eds: With AP Photos.) By TIM DAHLBERG AP Sports Columnist There was something a bit artificial about it to begin with, and not just because the worst team in the National League playoffs became the first beneficiary of the expanded wild card. The St. Louis Cardinals certainly celebrated as if it was real, even if they had to wait until they were off the field to go wild about their...

MLB Signs To Eight-Year, $12.4 Billion Deal With Broadcasters

Major League Baseball (MLB) will have no problem paying off its bills for the next eight years as it has come to an agreement with Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) and Fox Sports that will see the networks broadcast games until the end of the 2021 baseball season. The eight-year contracts will see MLB earn more than double the amount of the current deal with each network paying...

G$ Predicts the Division Series (where are the Windians?)

The word that you're looking for is "douchebilly" Well, the pretenders have all gone home. Except for Baltimore, of course—HOW DO THEY KEEP WINNING! Now we’re down to 9 contenders (and the Orioles left) to fight over Bud Selig’s congratulations and Grim Reaper handshake at the end of the month. The baseball season is such a grueling slog to me but this is the...
