With Tony Campana being designated for assignment, he was removed from this year’s Buntfest, and a spot opened up. What did the Chicago Cubs decide to do with their open spot? They had a play-in tournament with all the front office and PR personal. The play-in round was today and has just concluded. The winner of the 64th seed in this year’s Buntfest belongs to Nate “The Video Guy” Halm. If you have never heard of him, don’t feel bad, I doubt many have. He is likely to be a first round out as soon as he faces someone who actually has some experience laying down a bunt, and not someone who has been wearing a suit sitting in an office for a few years. All the same, good luck to him. The bigger news coming out of the play-in tournament was Theo Epstein beat out Jed Hoyer in the first round, only to get eliminated himself by fellow front office member Scott Harris. From reports from those who watched the tournament play-in, Harris appeared to be trying to throw the contest, which is a smart business move. If you ever are playing against your boss in any sporting event, the smart thing to do would be to lose to him. You do not want to show up the man who holds your career in his hands. I do not think that Epstein is so petty that he would fire Harris for his victory, but you never know. Everyone currently in Cubs training camp will participate in the Buntfest, the early favorite has got to be last year’s winner David DeJesus who beat out last year’s favorite Campana in the first round. Even though he is currently not in camp due to being placed on waivers, I wish Campana was still here and participating in the Buntfest. I rooted for him last year, and would have been doing the same this year if he had still been here. After all, if he could ever learn how to hit (or in this case bunt) he would have been an unstoppable leadoff hitter. With the field of 64 now filled, the real tournament will begin early next week. Good luck to all involved.
