With the St. Louis Cardinals stumbling down the stretch and the second wild card on the line, they have decided to leave top prospect Oscar Taveras off the major league roster. This comes when Carlos Beltran is looking like his Mets’ days and the club relying on players like Pete Kozma and Dan Descalso in regular roles. Taveras came into the 2012 as a potential breakout player after a solid campaign in Lo-A ball. The Cardinals were aggressive and started the 19-year-old (he turned 20 mid-season) at Double A. Taveras responded well, leading the team in hitting and homers. Taveras also received his 3rd championship in as many seasons (Texas League with Springfield this year, Midwest League last year, and Appalachian League before that). Taveras played in the futures game this year and was named Baseball America’s Double A player of the year. I took a look at Taveras’s MLE (Minor League Equivalency from the calculator at ML Splits) to see how his stats would have translated to the maj...

Cardinals hosting benefit concert

ST. LOUIS -- It was a day that had been planned for months and one those in attendance will never forget. But it almost didn't happen. Just two weeks before the Cardinals and third baseman David Freese were set to host a benefit concert to help raise money for Johnny Venus as he battles leukemia, the St. Louis native had to be re-admitted to the hospital due to a high fever...

Will Lohse’s win rate translate into Cy Young success?

On Tuesday night, St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Kyle Lohse picked up win number 15 of the season in the 4-1 victory over Houston. His 15-3 record translates to the highest winning percentage (.833) in the major leagues in 2012. Lohse brought his ERA down to 2.71, which is tied for second in the league. Still he seems to get little respect in national discussions of Cy Young Award...

Chris Carpenter to make 2012 debut Friday at Cubs

Chris Carpenter is set to make his 2012 debut just in time for the St. Louis Cardinals, who could use an ace up their sleeve to boost their pursuit of the second NL wild card. Carpenter was 4-0 in the postseason last fall but hasn't pitched since winning Game 7 of the World Series against Texas. He's back less than two months removed from surgery to relieve a nerve ailment...

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Kyle Lohse threw seven scoreless innings for his 15th victory and contributed an RBI double as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Houston Astros 4-1 Tuesday night to stay in front for the second NL wild card. Fernando Abad (0-5) had a career-best six strikeouts in the Astros' 100th loss. They're 8-8 this month under interim manager Tony DeFrancesco and need...

Highlighting Tony La Russa's New Book

It probably won’t be the first thing everyone remembers when all is said and done, but the 2012 season has been a relatively peaceful one for the Brewers. The club has certainly had its share of ups (the amazing and still-in-progress run that has gotten them back into the wild-card picture) and downs (the entire first four months of the season), but the Crew has largely avoided...

Chris Carpenter's Return Could Mean Another Magical Run for the Cardinals

Last year, the St. Louis Cardinals overcame extreme odds to even get into the postseason.  They knocked the Atlanta Braves out of the Wild Card, and rode that conquering to the World Series.  Once there, they battled the Texas Rangers in epic fashion before finally being crowned World Champions.  This year, St. Louis entered the season without their star first baseman...

Lynn's demeanor better, and so are the results

Despite spending nearly three weeks in the bullpen, where he was sent after struggling for the better part of a month, St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Lance Lynn moved into the top five in the National League in wins at 16 Wednesday night by blanking Houston for 6 1/3 innings in a 5-0 victory. Lynn allowed just three hits and two walks and only once allowed the Astros two runners...

Astros-Cardinals Preview

(AP) -- The St. Louis Cardinals benefited from another team's late collapse to make the playoffs and go on to win the World Series last season. They're hoping to avoid being on the other end of that situation this year. The Cardinals will try to get headed in the right direction during an advantageous portion of schedule that begins Tuesday night against Houston, though...
