David Wright may have vowed in spring training not to talk about his contract status this summer, but that has not stopped others from talking.

A day after general manager Sandy Alderson admitted that he will touch base with Wright's agents at some point this season, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said that the team is in no hurry to pursue negotiations with Wright.

"There's no gun to anybody's head, so let it just play out," Wilpon said. "At the right time, Sandy and I will discuss it and it will move on."

Wilpon did say that he considers Wright a "very special" case, given the third baseman's roots with the Mets and 12-year tenure in the organization. Just as Alderson said Wednesday, Wilpon admitted that he would like Wright to stick around after his current contract expires in 2013.

But Wilpon is in no rush to begin negotiations, for the simple reason that he does not have to be. The Mets hold a $16 million option on Wright's contract for 2013, after which he can become a free agent for the first time. Though the Mets might not want to brush up against that deadline with their franchise third baseman, they have some time to play with between now and then.

All that's clear is that both parties would like Wright to stick around for the foreseeable future, whenever they do decide to talk.

"David is very special," Wilpon said. "He's very special to me personally, to the fan base, to the organization as a whole, the community."
