The Yankees have acquired minor league infielder Matt Antonelli off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles. The 27-year-old appeared in 29 games with Triple-A Norfolk this season, batting .204 (19 for 93) with four doubles, one home run and seven RBIs. The Yankees announced the move Thursday. Antonelli has played games at first base, second base, third base and shortstop this season. He's also seen time in left field. Taken 17th overall by San Diego in the 2006 amateur draft, Antonelli saw his only big league action in 2008. He batted .193 (11 for 57) with one home run and three RBIs. To make room on the 40-man roster for Antonelli, the Yankees transferred LHP Cesar Cabral (broken left elbow) to the 60-day disabled list.

David Robertson Injury Means An Average Bullpen

If David Robertson hadn't been so mediocre in the two save attempts he made last week, I'd be way more upset about his injury. I had been in the Robertson As Closer Camp before he started closing and was willing to keep camping out after he blew his second save opportunity. But now that he has gone on the 15-day DL for that strained left oblique, it's easy for me to...

J.J. Hardy and Bill Hall were on a soap opera when they were Brewers

Current Orioles J.J. Hardy and Bill Hall have been teammates before. From 2005-9, they were both members of the Milwaukee Brewers. That’s not the interesting part though. What I’ve just learned is that back in ’07, Hardy and Hall were – along with fellow Brew Crew members Jeff Suppan and Chris Capuano – on the soap opera “The Young and the Restless.” And they weren’t...

How For Real Are The Orioles?

That's a question a lot of people are asking these days, as the O's sit atop the standings in the AL East. Short answer: probably not. The team has legitimately played well so far this year, but they're not this good. Right now they're on pace for 100+ wins, and everyone knows they can't keep that pace up. Here's what level they need to play at for the rest...

Is Adam Jones Pulling a Matt Kemp?

On Tuesday, Adam Jones took a 1-0 fastball from CC Sabathia in the second inning and launched it out to left field. On Wednesday, in the 15th inning, he destroyed a curveball from Nate Adcock, breaking a 3-3 tie and giving the Orioles a go-ahead run that led to their extra inning win. Yesterday, the victim was Luke Hochevar, whose 4th inning slider didn’t break far enough out...

Are we seeing the real Nick Markakis?

I wrote this for MASNSports.com last week. *** As we are seven weeks into the 2012 season, the Orioles are flying high with a 19-11 record, and are a half-game out of first in the American League East. Baltimore's fast start has given players like Matt Wieters, Adam Jones and Chris Davis some national attention. However, one name that I don't see mentioned a lot happens...

Jones Powers The Orioles to Victory; They Do the Amazing Again...

Well, it’s safe to assume that we are seeing the best of Adam Jones these days. At this point, do the Orioles consider extending him now? Will it get to the point where fans are asking to “pay the man?” I think Jones has now taken his game to another level. Last night showed it. Anyhow, last night, Adam Jones’ solo shot in the 15th inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent the...

Reds bats silenced by Pettitte, Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Pettitte pitched eight shutout innings for his first regular-season win since July 2010, leading the New York Yankees over the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 Friday night. Making his second major league start since ending his one-year retirement, the 39-year-old left-hander (1-1) limited the young, free-swinging Reds to four hits -- all singles. With a fastball that reached...

Royals blow late lead, lose to Orioles 4-3 in 15th

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Adam Jones homered with one out in the 15th inning, lifting the Baltimore Orioles to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. Jones was hitless in six at-bats before connecting for his team-leading 12th home run -- nine of them tying the game or giving the Orioles a lead. Jones sent a 2-2 pitch from Nate Adcock (0-1), the fifth Kansas...

Pettitte terrific in shutting down Reds

NEW YORK -- By the eighth inning, the fans at Yankee Stadium were passionately chanting his name, no longer just out of appreciation for Andy Pettitte's past, but in gratitude for his present. Inning after inning, Pettitte carried the New York Yankees' struggling offense, making the one early run his teammates gave him stand up for eight innings against the Cincinnati Reds...
