The Yankees salvaged the final game of the weekend at Tropicana Field avoiding what would have been a spirit-crushing sweep at the hands of the Rays. Can they turn it into another hot streak? If they hope to make a run at the playoffs over the next five weeks they'll have to. Alfonso Soriano sparked the game-winning rally in the 11th inning scoring on Curtis Granderson's sacrifice fly to give the Yankees a much-needed 3-2 win over the Rays. The Yankees moved within six games of the Rays who opened the day tied with the Red Sox for first place in the American League East. The Yankees also inched closer to the second AL wild card spot moving within 3.5 games of the A's. Soriano hit a one-out double in the 11th against Jamey Wright then stole third base to move the go-ahead run 90 feet from home. Granderson lifted a sac fly to center easily scoring Soriano to give the Yankees the lead. Making his final regular-season appearance at Tropicana Field Mariano Rivera closed the game against the heart of the Rays' lineup retiring Ben Zobrist Evan Longoria and Matt Joyce to pick up his 38th save.
