Found November 09, 2012 on NYC Sports Nation:
After getting traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Los Angeles Angels last season, Zack Greinke posted a 6-2 record with a 3.53 era.  Solid number for a backend rotation starter, however, he struggled at times with his command and had trouble keeping the ball low in the strike zone, which led him to give up 11 home runs in less than half a season. His performance left some questions surrounding his ability to perform in pressure situations, but overall, he did prove to be a solid Number 3 starter for the Angels last season. Despite some struggles, Greinke is considered one of the top free agent pitchers this offseason and will demand top dollar. Rumors have been circulating that Greinke is reportedly seeking a 6-year, $150 million contract or to be commanding no lower than a 5-year, 120 million dollar contract, there is hesitation mixed with guarded optimism that Brian Cashman may diligently attempt to place him in Yankees pinstripes. According to David Lennon of Newsday via Twitter, general manager Cashman met with Greinke's representatives. Greinke delivers a solid four-seam fastball that he mixes in beautifully with a curve and changeup  and when he keeps these specific pitches down in the zone -- he is often flat-out dominant. He might just be an ideal addition to a rotation that could use a quality Number 3 starter to make another championship run.  However, how would the pressure to perform in the toughest sports market in the MLB impact a pitcher who allegedly has had to deal with social anxiety issues at different points in his career? The Big Apple is certainly not for the faint of heart.  It should be noted, that he has worked past many of those issues, but is he worth the risk?  I think this is one-time Cashman is going to be extremely patient and see how the market plays out for Greinke, unless the pitcher surprises everyone and indicates from his own mouth that he welcomes the pressure and scrutiny sure to come his way, if he elects to put on Yankees uniform next season.

Zack Greinke Is Just What the Orioles Need

The Baltimore Orioles had by far  surprising run in 2012. Not one ESPN or MLB Network reporter predicted them to make as strong of a run as they did. After finishing the 2011 campaign 69-93, they turned it around with an impressive 93-69 record. They won an amazing 16 extra inning games in a row, an MLB record. The Orioles were definitely strong contenders this year, but lacked...

Yankees would like Mariano Rivera to take a pay cut

Two years ago, the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter hit many bumps in the road when coming to terms on a new deal for the iconic shortstop. It was quite the ugly public affair that upset both sides. Brian Cashman: “We’re not trading Alex”

The New York Yankees are not trading Alex Rodriguez. General manager, Brian Cashman would prefer if all the talk about Rodriguez’s status as a Yankee would go away. “I’ve already been on record right after the postseason, we’re not trading Alex,” he said. “So hopefully the Alex stuff stops. I’m reiterating, we’re not trading Alex Rodriguez. I’ve talked to every...

And We Have a 2B!

MLBTR reports that the Jays have signed Maicer Izturis (formerly of the Angels) to a 3 year deal worth $10M, with a club option for a 4th year. The reaction in comments I've seen so far seems to be pretty positive about this signing. Just over $3M per year is only a bit more than what the Jays were gonna have to pay Aviles anyways, and Izturis is a pretty similar value to Aviles...

Robinson Cano won't give Yankees a discount again

Robinson Cano still has one year left on his on his contract with the New York Yankees but that doesn't mean his agent Scott Boras hasn't already started to draw a line in the sand. While the Yankees have more pressing concerns — like resigning steady performers like Hiroki Kuroda, Andy Pettite and Mariano Rivera with short-term pacts — there is the conundrum of what...

Maicer Izturis Finds New Place to be Perfectly Acceptable

Just last season, Maicer Izturis wrapped up a three-year, $10-million contract. On Thursday, Maicer Izturis signed a three-year, $9-million contract. There’s also a fourth-year option — worth $3 million — for one of the very newest Toronto Blue Jays. Maybe that isn’t enough of a hook. Maybe this will make for a better hook. It’s the first multiyear contract that Anthopoulos...

Sherman: Yanks not in on Justin Upton

From Joel Sherman: The Yankees are so serious about dropping under that $189 million luxury tax threshold for 2014 that, according to a source briefed on their plans, they would not even do a two-year contract in the $20 million range with Torii Hunter, The Post has learned. Though Arizona’s Justin Upton has become available at the GM Meetings, a person involved in discussions...

Report: Yankees Unlikely to Make Push for Josh Hamilton or Zack Greinke, May Set Sights on Robinson Cano Extension

Baseball’s biggest spenders may be relatively quiet this winter, at least when it comes to big-name, big-money free agents. The New York Post reports that the Yankees aren’t likely to be in on Josh Hamilton or Zack Greinke, the two biggest names in free agency this offseason. If New York does splurge on a big contract, the Post reports, it will be on a contract extension for...

The Effects of the Luxury Tax

Major League Baseball’s general managers are meeting in Palm Springs, Calif., this week, which kicks the Hot Stove burner from simmer to medium-low. The burner will turn to high next month at the Winter Meetings in Nashville. Even on simmer, there is word from the Bronx that the Yankees won’t pursue “big time” — or even “less-than-big-time” — free agents this winter...
