TEAMS: Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres
The Yankees have claimed infielder Matt Antonelli off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles, according to Eduardo Encina of the Baltimore Sun.
Antonelli, 27, was drafted by the San Diego Padres 17th overall in the 2006 draft and was once ranked as high as No. 50 on Baseball America’s top prospects list. His major league experience is limited to 21 games for the Padres back in 2008 where he hit .193/.292/.281/.573. Since then he has bounced around from the Padres, to the Nationals, and to the Orioles.
After he hit .297/.393/.460/.853 in Triple-A last season, the Orioles signed him this year with the intent of using him at third base, but he struggled and hit .204/.357/.280/.636 in Triple-A this season and was designated for assignment last week.
Don’t expect him to sniff the majors with the Yankees. Instead he’ll provide depth at Triple-A while playing second and third base. If they needed infield help, both Eduardo Nunez and Ramiro Pena would probably be called up first.
