Yankees claim Ryota Igarashi off waivers

The Yankees have claimed former Met, right handed reliever Ryota Igarashi, off waivers from the Blue Jays and will assign him to Triple-A, according to Dan Barisi of the Wall Street Journal. Igarashi, 33, has pitched in parts of three seasons with the Mets and Blue Jays. He was actually signed with the Pirates this offseason, but after he failed to make the opening day roster he was claimed by the Blue Jays. He only pitched in two games for Toronto before they designated him for assignment. In 81 games and 70 innings in his career, he has a 6.17 ERA, an 8.9 K/9, and a 6.2 BB/9. Igarashi primarily throws three pitches, a fastball, splitter, and a curve with his fastball averaging about 94 mph. Igarashi is just another arm that the Yankees can store away in the minors. If he pitches well and there is an opportunity then there may be an opportunity. Otherwise he’s just depth.
