Phelps complained of discomfort in his forearm, and an MRI taken Friday showed the strain. Girardi said the strain is not in the ligament, adding that he anticipates Phelps would begin throwing in 10 days "and we’ll go from there."
"We just felt it was in our best interests," Girardi said. "There were discussions of just skipping him a start, instead of putting him on the DL. (But) we have the All-Star break on our side."
In 12 starts this season, Phelps is 6-5 with a 5.01 ERA. He has 75 strikeouts in 82⅔ innings of work.
Phelps was replaced on the roster by infielder Eduardo Nunez, who was activated from the disabled list yesterday and started at shortstop against the Baltimore Orioles.
