PLAYERS: David Phelps
TEAMS: New York Yankees
After a 61-pitch outing at Double-A Trenton on Tuesday, it looked like David Phelps might be ready to return to the New York Yankees' active roster.  However, the team will have him make one more rehab start before activating him from the disabled list.  Phelps is coming back from a strained right forearm. Brian Hoch of MLB.com says the Yankees will likely send Phelps out for another yet-to-be-determined rehab start.  It will likely come this weekend, though.  That means Phelps could return toward the end of next week.  This, of course, only happens as long as there are no setbacks with Phelps' next rehab outing. Joe Girardi says Phelps will throw a bullpen session on Friday.  This leaves Phelps available for a Sunday start if they keep him on his minor league rehab assignment. "He felt OK," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Phelps, who walked three and struck out six in his start Tuesday. "Probably not as sharp as we've seen him during the course of the season, but I kind of expect that when you haven't been on the mound and you haven't faced hitters in a while.  "I think we'll see him in New York and he'll throw a bullpen for us on Friday, and then he'll probably go out on another rehab start." Phelps was placed on the DL back at the beginning of July.  He suffered the forearm strain sometime before that point and had been complaining of discomfort in the area.  An MRI eventually revealed the strain.  Now, Phelps says he is pain free and ready to go.  He'll have to prove that to the Yankees though. The Yankees love Phelps because he is a homegrown player.  They drafted him in 2008 and he made his debut last season.  Overall, Phelps has made 51 appearances and 23 starts in his young career.  He owns a 4.10 ERA.  Phelps was struggling this season.  In 18 appearances (12 starts), he has a 5.01 ERA. Cruz to DL, Adams recalled

Luis Cruz will be the 17th player placed on the DL this season by the Yankees. The team announced that Cruz, who tweaked his knee in Monday’s game against Texas on a sliding catch, will head back to New York for an MRI. Infielder David Adams has been recalled from Triple-A Scranton. Cruz, 29, was signed earlier in the month after he was released by the Dodgers. In 16 games with...

Mid-Season Prospect Rankings

Gary Sanchez’s performance has earned him the top spot in our Prospect Rankings (Photo: Mark LoMoglio) With the All-Star Break come and gone, it’s time for our mid-season prospect rankings. There’s some changes at the top, with Rafael DePaula, Jose Ramirez, and and J.R. Murphy being some of the biggest movers. This season has seen the re-emergence of players such as Dellin...

Jeter may not return to Yankees lineup Saturday

Derek Jeter is eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday but don’t look for him to be in the Yankees’ lineup against the Rays. Though Jeter has been making progress with his right quadriceps injury by doing more running and regularly taking batting practice and ground balls manager Joe Girardi said before Wednesday night’s 3-1 loss to the Rangers at the Rangers Ballpark...

Yankees game 102 lineup: 7/25/13

The Yankees will try to earn a split of a four game series with Texas this afternoon from Arlington. Hiroki Kuroda takes to the mound with hopes of sending New York back to the Bronx on a winning note. The team will head home for a very important weekend series with the Rays – a series that might see Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez return to action. Lefty Derek Holland is on the...

Pete Rose Says Alex Rodriguez ‘Lacks Self-Confidence,’ Insists Third Baseman Isn’t Treated Fairly

Most current Major League Baseball players wouldn’t want to be caught dead associating with Pete Rose. So, it makes perfect sense that the all-time hit king is pretty chummy with Alex Rodriguez. Rose was in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Thursday — not at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, obviously, but at a memorabilia store a block away — and he spoke to USA Today on a number of...

A-Rod saga multi-layered, multi-lawyered

If you had to bet, which would you say Alex Rodriguez stands a better chance of doing? Returning to form as a healthy player for the New York Yankees, or avoiding a monstrous suspension from baseball? On both fronts, A-Rod appears to be trailing by five runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Really, the only question now is how each of his games will end. Is Rodriguez...

Source: Yanks plan A-Rod discipline

The New York Yankees intend to discipline Alex Rodriguez for seeking a second medical opinion on his injured leg without their permission, a person familiar with the team's deliberations said Thursday. The exact penalty had not yet been determined, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because no statements were authorized. A fine appeared...

Doctor who gave 2nd opinion on A-Rod now part of Biogenesis investigation

With friends like these Alex Rodriguez doesn’t need enemies — probably just more lawyers. Rodriguez managed to open a new door for doping investigators Wednesday when he put forward a New Jersey doctor to contradict the Yankees’ diagnosis of his quad injury; the doctor orthopedist Michael Gross of Hackensack University Medical Center was reprimanded in February for “failing...

Preview: Yankees @ Rangers (7/24/13)

Andy Pettitte (7-7, 4.47 ERA) is on the mound in game three of the four in Arlington and takes on the new addition to the Rangers Matt Garza. The last seven starts have been frustrating for Pettitte, he has gone 2-4 with a 5.40 ERA, and opponents have hit .311 against him after a beautiful outing on June 8 at Seattle. Most troubling of all for Pettitte is that he feels completely...

Yankees come back in 9th vs. Rangers

Eduardo Nunez hit a tying triple, Brent Lillibridge followed with a go-ahead single and the New York Yankees rallied against All-Star closer Joe Nathan in the ninth inning Tuesday night for a 5-4 victory over the Texas Rangers. New York's comeback got started when Vernon Wells drew a one-out walk against Nathan (1-1) and scored on Nunez's triple to deep center. Nunez stumbled...

Yankees Game 103: Six-run second spoils Soriano return

Alfonso Soriano was hitless in five at-bats on his Yankees return. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images) Tampa Bay Rays 10 — New York Yankees 6   It took one inning by Sabathia to be too much in tonight’s 10-6 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. After a strong first inning, featuring two strikeouts on sliders, the second inning was anything but good. Ben Zobrist started the inning with...

A-Rod vs. the Yankees is now the best comedy of the summer

For most of June and July, I've been trying to find a TV series to enjoy. I know — I should just watch more baseball. It's always the best TV of the summer. But a 30-minute-to-one-hour breather here and there helps clear the mind. It's a palate cleanser. At least for me.  Dexter and Under the Dome haven't really done it for me; I gave up on those shows after...

Yankees acquire Alfonso Soriano

After nine seasons away from the team that signed him as a 22-year old out of Japan, Alfonso Soriano has returned home to the Bronx. According to Jim Bowden of ESPN and MLB Network Radio, the Yankees and Cubs have completed a deal that sends the veteran outfielder to New York in exchange for a mid-level prospect who is not yet known. Because Soriano has 10-and-5 rights (10 years...

Alex Rodriguez Doesn’t Trust The Yankees

Here we go again. Alex Rodriguez has come out of ‘hiding’ and his first stop was to WFAN where he was interviewed by Mike Francesa. Rodriguez called into the afternoon show to tell the world he’s ready and willing to play ASAP and that the only thing stopping him are the Yankees. Arod had a conference call with Yankees management  on Thursday, and they agreed to a plan...

Rays-Yankees Preview

Those who expected Alex Rodriguez to be in the lineup Friday night, including Rodriguez himself, will have to wait a bit longer - and possibly much, much longer. The New York Yankees have others on the way ready to help their struggling offense, though. With a deal reportedly in place to acquire Alfonso Soriano and Derek Jeter set to come off the disabled list shortly, New York...
