Ivan “Super” Nova was outstanding in today’s 2-0 shutout win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Ivan Nova got into early trouble when he hit Adam Jones with a pitch and Matt Wieters hit a bloop single in front of Ichiro Suzuki. Nova would induce a double play and got a fly out to escape the jam.
Brett Gardner got the offense started with a double down the first base line. He would advance to third on Jeter’s out and Robinson Cano brought home Gardner with a double of his own.
Ivan Nova and Scott Feldman maintained the one-run game. Ivan Nova was dealing today. He would hit two Orioles batters but only allowed two hits through his first seven innings. In the eighth inning, Nova gave up a leadoff walk to J.J. Hardy but just as he pictured it, Nova induced a double play. The last batter of the inning would ground out back to Ivan Nova and he was visibly pumped up to go eight strong.
After seven innings of one-run baseball, Scott Feldman was replaced by left-hander Troy Pattton. The lefty had one job, Robinson Cano. The Yankees second baseman would bring in the insurance run for Nova with a deep home run to right field. His 25th home run of the season put the Yankees ahead by two and gave Ivan Nova some room for error as he returned to the mound for the ninth inning.
Ivan Nova came on for the ninth inning looking for the complete game shutout. The first batter, Nate McLouth would reach first for a single after the ground ball to Nova was retrieved and thrown a little wide of first base and pulled Overbay off of first. Manny Machado would weakly fly out to left field for the first out. Major league home run leader Chris Davis would hit a deep fly ball to the short porch but there was just enough room to make the catch. Adam Jones would hit a line drive to left field but it was right at the captain, Derek Jeter, to end the game.
Lyle Overbay entered today’s game with an 0-for-16 skid and snapped it with a 2-for-3 day.
Ivan Nova went the complete game, allowing just three hits while walking one and striking out five. He used 104 pitches.
The Yankees are now four back of the second Wild Card spot. They are 7.5 back in the American League East after a huge win with a tremendous start by Ivan Nova.

Ivan Nova (7-4, 3.14 ERA) leads the charge for October against Scott Feldman (4-3, 4.56 ERA) in a matinee showdown in the Bronx. Nova’s last start against the Rays was erratic, he tied a career high with six walks but still managed to hold them to just two runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings in a no decision. He has completed at least six innings in nine consecutive starts, and...
About 45 minutes before today’s Yankees/Orioles matchup began, the Yankees announced that third baseman Alex Rodriguez would be a late scratch for today’s game. The team says that the reason is due to “flu-like symptoms”.
Mark Reynolds (who was slated to start at first base) replaced Rodriguez at third, and Lyle Overbay came off the bench to play first. In the original...
Let me preface this piece by saying in no way is this a pro-Yankee stance, and that I will never steal buy a Joe Pepitone jersey. I also promise to never partake in the suite-service of the Legends seats that sit directly behind home plate. I will never accept free tickets to do this! It’s terrible that you can eat high-quality shrimp and lobster while watching one of the...
The New York Yankees welcomed second baseman Robinson Cano
back into their starting lineup last night as they opened their weekend series
against the Baltimore Orioles. While New York saw Cano return from his bruised
hand, infielder Eduardo Nunez remained sidelined due to his lingering knee
injury, according to Josh Vitale of MLB.com.
Cano and Nunez both suffered their...
The Yankees begin the most important homestand of the season – 10 games – starting with the Baltimore Orioles tonight. New York finds themselves five games out of the second wild card spot and eight games behind in the division. CC Sabathia takes the ball and will try to set the tone. He faces off against Miguel Gonzalez. You can check out a full preview of tonight’s game here...
The Yankees kick off a tough 10 game home stand with the Orioles in town, as CC Sabathia (11-11, 4.81 ERA) goes head to head with Miguel Gonzalez (8-6, 3.77 ERA). Sabathia looked liked the ace of old for five innings his last time out, against the Rays, but it all came to a halt in the three run sixth that cost the Yankees. The big lefty said the whole season has felt like “one...
Phil Hughes (4-13, 4.91 ERA) and the Yankees look for some redemption after they were on the swept end of a three game sweep against Chicago in August. Jose Quintana (7-4, 3.66 ERA) is on the mound for the White Sox. Hughes had his start pushed back from Sunday after a many MANY rough outings. He was hit for five runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Blue Jays on Aug. 26, and his ERA...
Andy Pettitte (10-9, 4.05 ERA) gets the start in place of Hughes as the Yanks go for the sweep against Wei-Yin Chen (7-7, 3.76 ERA.) Pettitte will look to build on the seven scoreless innings he threw against the Blue Jays on Tuesday. That game marked the first time this season he didn’t allow a run in a start. The last time he faced Baltimore, he threw 6 2/3 innings of four run...
The New York Yankees have already taken two of three games against the Baltimore Orioles, with tomorrow still to play, and are now four games out from owning one the American League wild card spots.
Friday night the Yankees had won 8-5 in large part due to long balls by Alfonso Soriano and Ichiro along with some key hits by Robinson Cano and Mark Reynolds. Although CC Sabathia was...
Ten games at home. We need to win eight.Anybody wanna buy a bridge? Starting now, A-Rod must hit in the clutch. Beginning this weekend, Phil Hughes - or whomever it is - must be lights-out. In a few hours, Robbie's hand must heal. Maybe Slade Heathcott will jell! We must play better than we have all season. Eight out of ten. No problemo. Then, we need to drive to Baltimore and...

Baltimore Orioles 5 — New York Yankees 8
The momentum went back and forth but Ichiro Suzuki turned the tide in tonight’s 8-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Through the first three innings, Miguel Gonzalez and CC Sabathia were in a pitcher’s duel. Only one Yankees batter reached base on a walk but was erased on a double play. The innings...

Baltimore Orioles 7 – New York Yankees 3
Yankees unable to complete the sweep after a dreadful seventh inning in today’s 7-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles.
Brett Gardner was a spark for the Yankees offense. In the first inning, Gardner hit a double into the right field corner. Derek Jeter and Robinson Cano make two outs but Orioles starter...
Once Yankees manager Joe Girardi started making walks to the mound, the Baltimore Orioles began running around the bases.
In position for a weekend sweep, New York let it slip away Sunday when a normally solid bullpen fell apart. J.J. Hardy and Adam Jones hit three-run homers in a seven-run seventh inning as Baltimore erupted to win 7-3 in a matchup of wild-card contenders.
The New York Yankees can't afford to turn in a series against the Chicago White Sox like they did last month if they want to remain in contention for the playoffs.
Phil Hughes surprisingly may give them a chance to get off to a good start in this one even though he is winless in nine outings.
Hughes owns a lower ERA against the White Sox than versus any other AL foe as the...
Scott Feldman isn't going to get upset. He knows he was outpitched.
Feldman was impressive for seven innings after a rocky first, but Baltimore managed just three hits against Ivan Nova and lost 2-0 to the New York Yankees on Saturday.
''Sometimes the other guy is better and I think that's what happened today,'' Feldman said.
Nova (8-4) outworked Feldman...
