New York Yankees 2 — Toronto Blue Jays 3

Sacrifice flies were not enough in today’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Today was the first day of struggle for Andy Pettitte since returning from the disabled list. Pettitte gave up a 1st inning home run to Rajai Davis to cut his 2-run lead in half. A lead off double by Jeff Mathis became a run on an infield single by Rajai Davis as Alex Rodriguez was forced to decide his best option for the speedy Toronto outfielder. The last run on Pettitte’s line would be an inherited run scoring off of Joba Chamberlain when Adeiny Hechavarria hit a double to right field. Pettitte went 5.2 innings and walked 3 while striking out 4. Cody Eppley and David Robertson put together a good inning and Joba Chamberlain didn’t give up a run on his line while striking out 3.

When a starter goes just 3 innings, generally that would be a good day but despite giving up 6 hits, Ricky Romero only gave up 2 runs. After 2 singles and a walk opened the game for the Yankees, a sacrifice fly would produce the first run. Another single followed to reload the bases and in a repeat of events, another sacrifice fly would bring in the second run of the game. The inabilities to hit with runners in scoring position was resounding in today’s game. In the 2nd and 3rd innings, there were runners on 2nd or the bases were loaded with no outs, respectively. In both instances, the Yankees would get 3 consecutive outs and not produce a single run. By the end of the game, the Yankees had hit 2 for 11 with runners in scoring position.

Win – Shawn Hill (1-0)

Loss – Andy Pettitte (5-4)

Save – Casey Janssen (21)
