Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 10 — New York Yankees 8

With the bases loaded, Alex Rodriguez popped out to end the rally in a 10-8 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Ivan Nova didn’t have a good outing in his 6 innings of work. Nova was the victim of home runs as the 3 home runs he surrendered resulted in 4 of the 6 runs he allowed. Hitters not known for home run power, Erick Aybar and Maicer Izturis, each took Nova deep to the short porch in right field. Curtis Granderson kept the game from getting out of hand with a pair of  outstanding defensive gems. Chad Qualls worked 1.1 innings of work and gave up 3 runs as the Angels hardly let up on any Yankees pitcher in today’s game. Angels Mark Trumbo continues making it a habit of hitting the home run against the Yankees, hitting his 6th against the Yankees this season.

The Yankees were not deterred from hitting home runs by Angels starter Jered Weaver. On 10 hits, 3 of them being home runs, the Yankees put up 5 runs against Weaver. Alex Rodriguez put the Yankees on the board early after Nova put them in an early hole by tying the game at 2 with a blast into right field. This home run snapped his 49-at bat homerless streak. Baserunning mistakes loomed large when Jered Weaver caught Robinson Cano off 1st base and the double play would be completed when Alex Rodriguez attempted to score from 3rd on the “Jeff Nelson move.” The Yankees would make the bottom of the 9th inning very interesting despite being down by a score of 10-5. Ernesto Frieri entered today’s game without allowing a run in 26 appearances but had his first difficult outing in today’s appearance. After a lead-off walk to Robinson Cano, Mark Teixeira ended the scoreless streak of Frieri’s with a two-run home run to to right field. Another walk would prove to be end of Frieri’s appearance without giving up an out. With reliever Scott Downs on the mound, Curtis Granderson would induce a walk and put the deficit at just 2. With Alex Rodriguez at the plate and the  next reliever, Kevin Jepsen, was brought in. Alex Rodriguez came up with the bases loaded and a tie with Lou Gehrig for all-time leader of grand slams but would not surpass Gehrig as he would pop out to Albert Pujols to cut the rally short.
