NEW YORK — Pedro Martinez was good Thursday night. A.J. Burnett and the New York Yankees were better in a 3-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The World Series, tied 1-1, now rolls to Philadelphia with each team feeling good about itself.
Yankees' optimism
• Burnett worked seven innings and allowed one run on four hits. From the fourth through seventh innings, he faced one hitter over the minimum.
• The Yankees have silenced Ryan Howard. Since doubling in his first at-bat in Game 1, Howard has reached base once. He struck out in all four at-bats Thursday. "A.J.'s curveball was working," Howard said. "Nasty."
• The long ball returned to the Yankees' attack in Game 2 on homers by Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui.
