The New York Yankees may have to start the season without their veteran shortstop.  Derek Jeter's ankle has not held up well to him playing in the field, and he is now battling inflammation.  The future Hall of Famer has received a cortisone shot, but there is a chance he missed Opening Day. According to Wallace Matthews of ESPN New York, the Yankees' GM Brian Cashman is not certain Jeter will be ready for Opening Day.  He also can't rule out the possibility that Jeter might have to go on the disabled list.  The team wants to be as careful as possible with their captain's ankle. Jeter suffered a fractured ankle during last season's ALCS.  He had to miss the rest of the postseason and underwent surgery to repair the ankle.  Jeter returned this spring and has split time between DHing and playing shortstop.  It wasn't until he started playing the field when his ankle started acting up. If Jeter has to start the season on the DL, he will be in good company.  Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira will both be on the disabled list to start the season.  That's not exactly the picture the Yankees want to see.  Three high-priced stars injured and on the bench.
