The stage is set for the next epic confrontation in the rivalry that never quits -- the Boston Red Sox vs. the New York Yankees. This one will be over who gets the services of Minnesota's Johan Santana, quite possibly baseball's best pitcher. It's a fight the Yankees can't afford to lose.

  • I just can't see either team justifying a trade for Santana. The Red Sox didn't need him in 07', their starters were the best in baseball. The Yankees would be foolish to give up the quality young arms in their system. Santana is a great pitcher, but won't make that big of a difference in either of these teams winning another World Series.
  • tough to come to conclusion as a sox fan...would we love to have that "rare power lefty?"....sure, but don't want to give up Pedroia, Buchholz, Lester or Jacoby in any two for 1 package...yanks need him more...we just need to trade coco and we're done for the year w/ free agency, etc...yanks can have him...feel good with starters we have now...peace...I'm out and enjoy football everyone today
  • I disagree that Santana 'won't make that big of a difference.' He might not for the Red Sox, since they already have a No.1 guy (Beckett). The Yankees don't have a Beckett, Sabathia, Jake Peavy lock-down top of the rotation guy. I would hate to give up too much, but I see the Yankees going all-out on this one. They won't stand for him landing in Boston or with the Mets.
  • I think the Mets and Yanks will battle this one out tooth and nail....not Boston. Both need a dominant lefty but Santana may opt for the pitcher's park.
  • The Yanks cant afford to lose this race. Pitching has been their achilles heal in the playoffs for years at this point. There are probably only a couple of guys in baseball that the Yanks should trade future talent for and Santana is one of them. They would need to feel that a longer term deal with Santana can be locked down though to do the deal. Santana is 28 and still has a lot of great years ahead of him.
  • That has been exactly my point. The Yankees have the greatest need, and will likely give the Twins the most.
  • The Yankees definitely need Santana more than the Mets. But, I guess it's really whoever pulls out the cash quicker.
  • what about this idea, three teams would be involved: twins, yankees, and marlins.
    twins get-robinson cano,1 pitching prospect,Miguel Cabrera.
yankees get-johna santana, low hitting prospect from marlins.
marlins get-philip hughes,1 pitching prospect from each team
  • Too complicated. Besides, why would the Twins take on Cabrera when they are trading Santana because they can't pay him. They won't be able to pay Cabrera, either.
  • once they get the new stadium, they will be able to do some things, and they need a 3rd basemen badly
  • The yankees will do whatever it takes to land Santana, to bad they wouldnt take Giambi, Pavano, and Igawa!.........and there contracts!
  • you can have him...you need a decent starter...we in Boston don't want that guy at all....don't need another starter...wouldn't mind taking Giambi off your hands...but, again, don't need a 1st baseman after Lowell said no to your Dynamic duo...point is, we have 45k lees on payroll, but a better built team...04' and 07'...too early for the smack, but we are better going into 08'...as you say LOL
