The Yankees have sold Triple-A first baseman Steve Pearce to the Baltimore Orioles for cash after he exercised a June 1 opt-out clause in his contract, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

Pearce, 29-years-old, absolutely crushed the ball at Triple-A this season. In 52 games he had an amazing line of .321/.422/.574/.996. Usually a line like that would at least get a team to give you a chance in The Show, but the Yankees were set at first base and with Eric Chavez healthy it didn’t make a lot of sense to promote him.

So they sold his rights to the Orioles rather than lose him for nothing. Hard to blame them for that, but hopefully it doesn’t come back to haunt them as he will join the O’s Major League team.

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder-first baseman Steve Pearce from the New York Yankees for cash. The deal was announced Saturday before Baltimore played at Tampa Bay on Saturday night. The 29-year-old Pearce was hitting .321 with 11 home runs and 30 RBIs for the Yankees' Triple-A team. He played parts of five seasons with Pittsburgh through last year and hit .232...

Yankees dealing with confrontational umpires

These umpires are getting out of control. First, Russell Martin has to deal with Laz Diaz, who refused to let him throw new balls back to the mound because he hadn’t earned the right. Now, Joe Girardi and hitting coach Kevin Long have a run in with Bob Davidson, who Girardi accused of goading them into getting ejected over the weekend. “You saw the call on Curtis in a 2-1...

Girardi Believes Joba Will Pitch This Year

From Roger Rubin:With reliever David Robertson and outfielder Brett Gardner close to beginning minor league rehab assignments, Joe Girardi is asked daily about their progress. On Saturday he brought other, unexpected, rehab news: reliever Joba Chamberlain is throwing pitches from halfway up a mound. And Girardi believes the righthander will return and contribute for the Bombers this...

Yankees struggles with runners in scoring position

Time for some fun graphs, folks. What might this graph tell us? Quite a lot (none of which, remember, tells the whole story). From glancing, you might come to some or all of these conclusions: The Yankees suck with runners in scoring position as a function of their low batting average. The Yankees don’t only suck with runners in scoring position, but they suck on the same...

Six Straight Losses and Counting for the Orioles...

When things have seemed particularly bad with the Birds this week, it has only gotten worse. I could not believe what I saw last night with the Orioles as they lost to the Tampa Bay Rays, 5-0, in a series matchup that is pretty much now a must-win. They are now out of first place, and the Rays are a game up on them in the divisional hunt. It is now six straight losses and counting...

MRI 'all good' for Orioles' Jones

Tests on Baltimore Orioles center fielder Adam Jones’ hands and wrists came back negative Monday. Jones had an MRI in Florida during an off day for the Orioles that showed contusions but no other damage. As a result, the Orioles said via Twitter that he will be able to continue playing when Baltimore starts a series Tuesday night in Boston. Jones also confirmed via Twitter...

Yankees still interested as Jorge Soler declared a free agent

It’s taken longer than anyone could have reasonably expected, but 20-year-old Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler was finally declared a free agent by Major League Baseball over the weekend and is free to sign with any team. Soler comes in at 6-foot-4 and 225-pounds and is much more raw than Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, but over time some think that he could potentially be...

Moore looking for improvement against Orioles

Now that Baltimore's longest skid of the season has ended, the Orioles hope to begin a run in the right direction. The Orioles look to win consecutive games for the first time in two weeks Sunday when they conclude their series with the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. Brian Matusz allowed a run and two hits over 7 1-3 innings to help Baltimore (30-23) snap its six-game losing...

Former Mets, Orioles General Manager Jim Duquette Donates Kidney to 10-Year-Old Daughter

After eight years of hospital trips and dozens of medications, 10-year-old Lindsey Duquette is having a life-changing operation on Monday. The surgery will give her a new kidney and hopefully a new lease on life, freeing her up from the ravages of a disease called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. The donor? Her father, Jim Duquette, 46, an MLB analyst and Sirius radio host who...

Damn. Now I'm confused: After all this, I guess we SHOULDA traded Hughes and Joba for Santana

Another reason to tar and feather Cashman! If it hadn't been for him - refusing to trade Hughes and Joba for Johann Santana - we would be sitting on a no-hitter this morning. "Dammit, Brian Cashman, we’d be better off if you were never born!"Wait a minute. Something just happened. I'm no longer wet.. We didn’t get that grand slam last night, because Grandyman...

Trade Rumor: Yankees interested in Cubs’ Matt Garza

If the Yankees make a deal for a starter at this year’s July 31st trade deadline it is likely that Matt Garza of the Cubs will be their top target, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Heyman suggested that the Yankees like Garza over other potentially available starters such as Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum of the Brewers and Ryan Dempster of the Cubs. He identified Wandy...

Yankees 9, Tigers 4

Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam against his former team in the second inning, and CC Sabathia made the lead hold up after a shaky start, helping the New York Yankees to a 9-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Alex Rodriguez added a two-run homer in the ninth for New York. It was tied at 1 when Granderson cleared the bases with a drive just inside the pole in right...

Deep Impact: Nothing Really Matusz To Me

At the beginning of last year, Brian Matusz was a popular sleeper and a candidate to evolve into the next Greg Maddux, mixed with a side of MacGyver and a Dragon from the future. Everyone loves sleepers, as you think you’re the only one who knows what’s up. The funny thing is, everyone thinks like that and also knows that you know. If they know what you know, you should also...
