Yankees Sign Relief Pitcher Luis Vizcaino

Via Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger: Source: Yankees signed reliever Luis Vizcaino to a minor league deal. He’ll make 750K if he makes the roster. Vizcaino, a 36-year-old who pitched for the Yankees in 2007, hasn’t actually pitched in the majors since 2009 due to injuries. Even that year he was limited to only 15.1 innings. If he’s healthy in 2011 this isn’t a terrible signing. It’s only a minor league deal so if he doesn’t pitch well in spring training then no harm no foul, they can release him or send him to the minors at that point. But he does have a 103 ERA+ during his career which means he could be a decent middle reliever. Certainly not a guy that you would want in a tough spot, but still usable. Realistically this signing seems like a waste of time to me though. But relievers are a sporadic bunch. Throw a bunch of them at the wall and see which ones stick.
