Tonight, last year’s MVP will meet the Yankees’ most effective young pitcher of the last few years. Justin Verlander’s last start was far from his best, but he comes in with a WHIP of 0.80 in 31.1 innings pitched and almost four times as many strikeouts as walks. Four of his seven runs allowed came when Jim Leyland trotted him out for the ninth inning of a 2-0 game against the Rays. Clearly, he is still in the groove that created last season’s memorable run.
