The Yanks just spent a couple of days getting shut down by a pair of pitchers they had no business being shut down by. The Detroit Tigers are coming off a sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners. Two teams expected to reside at the top have been decidedly mediocre early in the season, with both of them residing in .500 territory. Tonight, last year’s MVP will meet the Yankees’ most effective young pitcher of the last few years. Justin Verlander’s last start was far from his best, but he comes in with a WHIP of 0.80 in 31.1 innings pitched and almost four times as many strikeouts as walks. Four of his seven runs allowed came when Jim Leyland trotted him out for the ninth inning of a 2-0 game against the Rays. Clearly, he is still in the groove that created last season’s memorable run. Ivan Nova, on the other hand, has been able to string together 15 consecutive wins without really dominating anybody.
