DETROIT -- Joe Girardi got incensed over a bloop. A couple of blasts by his team made up for it. Mark Teixeira and Eric Chavez homered off Detroit Tigers reliever Joaquin Benoit on consecutive eighth-inning pitches, propelling the New York Yankees to a 4-3 victory at Comerica Park Thursday. The Yankees, who won their second straight after dropping the first two games of the series, have a major-league leading 172 homers this season. Alex Avila had a two-run homer for Detroit, which dropped one game behind the American League Central Division-leading Chicago White Sox. The game was delayed 29 minutes by rain. Girardi, the Yankees manager, was ejected in the fifth inning after arguing a controversial call on an RBI double by Detroit's Andy Dirks. Third-base umpire Tim Welke initially ruled the bloop foul, then changed his call. The ball bounced past left fielder Raul Ibanez, ensuring that Quintin Berry would score from first. Chavez is doing a nice A-Rod impersonation

Eric Chavez has filled in admirably for Alex Rodriguez, but the veteran third baseman isn't comparing himself to the three-time American League MVP. Chavez went 2-for-4 Thursday with a solo home run, which proved to be the decisive run in the New York Yankees' 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers. Chavez finished the series hitting .563 (9-for-16) with two home runs and five...

Yankees reliever beaned by teammate

Our not top play of the night award goes to Cody Eppley, a relief pitcher of the New York Yankees that was accidently hit in the head on a throw from third baseman Eric Chavez. Eppley was staring at the mound when Chavez threw him a ball after tossing it around the infield. Perhaps the most entertaining part of the video is the YES network analysts laughing during the replay.

Yankees reliever Cody Eppley took a ball off the noggin courtesy of teammate Eric Chavez (VIDEO)

Baseball players know that the occasional beaning is all a part of the game.  Except that normally you don’t expect to get nailed in the head by one of your own teammates, which is exactly what happened to Yankees reliever Cody Eppley during the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s game against the Tigers. Eppley wasn’t paying attention to the infielders throwing the ball around...
