INSIDER: As mentioned, the Red Sox lost tonight so the Yankees have taken sole possession of first place in the AL East for the first time since the end of the 2006 season. (Finally!). The Yankees winning streak stands at 2 and they have also taken the first of a 4-game series against the Cleveland Indians.
ON THE MOUND:

Making his 10th start of the season, Pettitte was visited by manager Joe Girardi and assistant trainer Steve Donohue in the fourth inning after Ben Francisco's flyout, but remained in the game despite the stiff back.
He continued working into the sixth, when he allowed a single and a walk to open the frame. That drew Girardi back out on a visit, and Pettitte threw two more pitches -- both balls -- before Girardi and Donohue both came out to retrieve him. 45 of Pettitte's 84 pitches were strikes.
Alfredo Aceves inherited the two-on, none-out jam and allowed a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Shin-Soo Choo before escaping with only one run scoring, charged to Pettitte, who earned the win, allowed six hits, walked a season-high five and struck out one. Overall he pitched 3 scoreless and struck out three.
Mariano Rivera notched down his 10th save of the season in the 9th inning.THE OFFENSE:

Derek Jeter had an RBI single and Mark Teixeira a run-scoring groundout in the second inning, scoring Nick Swisher and Brett Gardner, respectively.

Swisher added a sacrifice fly in the third to bring home Robinson Cano.
