The New York Yankees have acquired minor league infielder Brent Lillibridge from the Chicago Cubs on Friday for a player to be named or cash. Lillibridge is one of several backup infielders acquired by the Yankees this season to help fill in for their injured All-Stars. The trade Friday is the second deal between New York and Chicago this year. The Yankees acquired Alberto Gonzalez from the Cubs in May, and he spent a week with the team before being demoted. Gonzalez was recalled from Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre earlier Friday when Reid Brignac was designated for assignment. Lillibridge will report to Scranton. Lillibridge, who broke into the major leagues in 2008 with Atlanta, is going to his sixth team. The Cubs designated him for assignment after nine games in April and has been with Triple-A Iowa since.

Cubs trade Brent Lillibridge, Hisanori Takahashi and other notes

Yesterday the Cubs traded Brent Lillibridge to the Yankees for a player to be named later or cash. Lillibridge had only 24 PA for the Cubs before being sent to the minors. He managed a .042/.042/.042 batting line and provided -0.5 fWAR. The city of Des Moines is thankful the Cubs have traded him. The Cubs also traded Hisanori Takahashi to the Rockies for a player to be named later...

Sat Funnies: Darwin Barney angers "The Cubs Way" Forefathers

I read the Cubs/Astros recap on ESPN and found this quote from Darwin Barney and couldn't help but think... what BLASPHEMY!The Forefathers must be furious! And then "Forefathers" led to George Washington so...Anyway, not to be taken too seriously, just hopefully making a laugh out of molehill.Happy to see the homers (nice one, Anthony!) and of course, Go Cubs.

Why the Chicago Cubs shouldn’t trade Garza

Matt Garza (photo credit: Getty Images) Every year since Matt Garza has been on the team he has had trade speculation surrounding him. Why shouldn’t Garza have that surrounding him? He has been on a team that hasn’t come close to finishing first in their division in many years; he has been outstanding on the mound while healthy, and he is a great team player and veteran to have...

Alvin’s open letter to Theo Epstein after a content editor gets through with it

The other day, Alvin Yellon satisfied many of us with a classic example of his stupidity. Like many, Ryno has had a lot of fun with this. Here here is (the rest of this is from Ryno). Just for fun, I decided to look at Alvin’s open letter as an editor. All bits and hyperbole aside, I wanted to see exactly how much ******** was in there. Alvin’s original was 2,185 words, and...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 6-19-13

Nashville Sounds 5 @ Iowa Cubs 4 (7 innings) Logan Watkins! Double triples and a single single. 7 bases in one game is fine with me. Donnie Murphy had a single and a walk, with 2 RBI. Junior Lake had a walk, a strikeout, and an RBI. Brett Jackson had a walk and no strikeout. Brooks Raley had a double and his average is .333. Brooks Raley is bad at pitching. His ERA sits at 5...

Cubs rumors: Chicago ready to sell

Before the season even began, the Chicago Cubs were expected to become sellers at the trade deadline. They have yet to make this announcement, but rival evaluators tell Buster Olney of ESPN that the Cubs are officially “open for business.” While some teams may be willing to sell, they may not have much in the way of players that rival clubs are interested in. Olney...

Top Ten Reasons Luis Valbuena Will Flip His Bat

In the bottom of the third inning of the Saturday game against the Houston Astros, Luis Valbuena hit a two-run single…and flipped his bat.  Usually, bat flips are reserved for humongous hits, i.e. a grand slam, but Luis seems to love doing this, almost like he has some weird baseball-related Tourette’s tic.  That got me to wondering…what are the biggest factors in determining...

Nate Schierholtz is Worth Going After

According to Buster Olney, the Chicago Cubs are open for business. They’re a rebuilding franchise with no real playoff aspirations and a bunch of interesting veterans who are free agent eligible at the end of the year, so it makes sense for them to make some present-for-future trades. The focus is likely going to be on their pitching, as Matt Garza and Scott Feldman will be two...

Cubs 3, Astros 1

Matt Garza pitched into the ninth inning and Anthony Rizzo hit his first home run since May 18 to lead the Chicago Cubs over the Houston Astros 3-1 on Friday after a rain delay that lasted more than 3 hours. Darwin Barney and Scott Hairston also homered for the Cubs. The subject of trade speculation, Garza (2-1) allowed four hits and struck out eight in eight-plus innings for his...

Chris Davis Chasing 73

In 1998 Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa took sports fans by storm, going back and forth, trying to break the MLB single season home run record.  At that time the record was 61 and it was held by Roger Maris since 1961.  On September 7, 1998, Big Mac, 34 years old, slugged home run number 61, off Mike Morgan of the Chicago Cubs, tying the record.  It was an amazing thing to witness...
