SF Giants Blog:
The San Francisco Giants signed Omar Vizquel to play short stop for three years at over $4 million a year, knowing that by the end of the contract he’d be getting on up to Jack Benny’s proverbial age of 39. Looks like they knew something else, which the scoffers in 2005 did not. Vizquel has been the best short stop we’ve seen in San Francisco. His current career fielding average is .984—and this past year he topped the league at .993. In the entire 2006 season, he made only four errors. So we can’t be surprised that he’s up for his 11th Golden Glove award. What slides by in the discussion of Omar’s awesome defense is that he hits (lifetime .295) and he steals, with a total of 366 bases so far. Congratulations, Omar, and thanks!
