New York Mets
Eric Young made a diving catch to take a go-ahead hit away from Todd Helton in the sixth inning, then raced home with the tiebreaking run in the eighth, and the New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on Tuesday night.
The Rockies have lost 12 of 18 since the All-Star break and have scored five runs in their last three games.
LaTroy Hawkins gave up a pair of two-out singles in the ninth before Ike Davis made a diving catch on Yorvit Torrealba's sinking liner foul down the first base line. It was Hawkins first save since May 6, 2012, for the Angels.
Scott Atchison (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
Eric Young led off the eighth with a single against Wilton Lopez (1-4). He was able to take second on Marlon Byrd's deep fly, putting him in position to make it home on Juan Lagares' infield single, a slow chopper to second base, that he just barely beat out.
Young sped up as he rounded third and beat the throw home. Lagares also hit a two-run triple in the first...
BEST OF MAXIM
In case you missed the big news, the New York Mets have promoted Wilmer Flores from Triple-A Las Vegas. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for the Mets and even Flores who celebrates his 22nd birthday today.
This was the correct move for the Mets as it keeps Daniel Murphy at second base and Eric Young in left field without having to upset the apple cart as they had originally...
The New York Mets are finally giving Wilmer Flores his opportunity as they promoted him from Triple-A Las Vegas and will start him tonight at third base against Colorado. Ironically, today is Flores’ 22nd birthday.
The Mets, currently in an overall team-hitting slump, could use an offensive boost from Flores, who is hitting .321 with 15 homers and 86 RBI. The thought of Flores...
Altoona 5, Binghamton 4
Despite two home runs from Wilfredo Tovar, the Binghamton Mets had three costly throwing errors as they fell to the Altoona Curve, 5-4 on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. The loss snapped their five-game winning streak.
After a scoreless first inning, Binghamton struck the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Tovar blasted a solo shot...
LaTroy Hawkins got the save on Tuesday night for the Mets against the Rockies as they won the first game of the series 3-2.
The 40-year-old vet, an avid user of Twitter, got an interesting message last night to celebrate the save.
As you can see above one fan decided to do some trolling of LaTroy after he staggered to the finish, giving up two hits with two outs.
Hawkins was none...

Who remembers this one from Shea Stadium when Hubie Brooks was the future of third base?
While you try to get the theme music from the Flinstones out of your head, there’s some big news out of Mets’ camp today.
Prospect Wilmer Flores, who’s been tearing the cover off the ball at Triple-A, has been promoted to the big club to replace the injured David Wright.
Recently, I was discussing with a friend how I don’t watch every inning, especially since David Wright...
It was a quieter night in the world of Mets Minors purely because Binghamton, St. Lucie, Brooklyn, and Kingsport did not play a game — but as you’ve heard by now, there was definitely some points to talk about…
Well, the sweet swing of Wilmer Flores will be in a Citi Field near you soon…and spoiler alert: There’s only one Citi Field where this Flores will be rocketing...
Dustin Lawley, OF, St. Lucie: Lawley continues to annihilate FSL league pitching. This week he has hit three home runs, seven RBIs, and is hitting .286 in 21 at bats. Lawley is too advanced for Single-A pitching, and he deserves to be called up to AA soon. It will be interesting to see how he fares against AA pitching once he’s promoted.
Luis Cessa, SP, Savannah: Luis...
Both suspended Mets players issued statements a short while ago:
Today, I was notified by the Commissioner of Major League Baseball that I have been suspended for 50 games for violation of the Joint Drug Agreement. Out of respect for the Mets’ organization, my teammates, and my family, I have decided to accept this suspension and not exercise my rights under the Basic...
Plate umpire Manny Gonzalez has left Tuesday night's game between the Rockies and Mets after he was struck in what appears to be the throat by a pitched ball that bounced off the dirt.
As pinch-hitter Charlie Blackmon attempted to lay down a bunt at the start of the sixth inning, the pitch from Jenrry Mejia bounced up and lodged underneath Gonzalez's protective mask. Gonzalez...
