Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

Valentine sounded tones of humility last night in his post-interview meeting with the media, insisting he would “expect,” even “hope for” input from the front office on day-to-day issues, including the formulation of the lineup. He also said he would be open to the use of statistical data to influence managerial decisions.

“As I told Ben, this is a growth opportunity for me,” Valentine said. “I’m one of these guys. I know I’m old. The back of my card gives my date of birth, but I want to understand what’s going in my life, and my life is baseball. I’ve been outside the information age of baseball for the most part.”

Valentine said two close friends, New Jersey Devils president Lou Lamoriello and former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, suggested he look into the Red Sox opening. But Valentine didn’t want to publicize his interest in the job and go through the transparent interview process unless the feeling was mutual.

Thus, the stealth meeting in Hartford.

Herald | Veteran skipper Bobby Valentine meets Sox brass

It's looking more and more like Bobby Valentine will be the guy. He gets so much media attention just based on his profile that it's hard to imagine the Sox going this far down the process and not pulling the trigger on him.

You can see why they started his interview process -- or at least expression of interest -- behind closed doors. You don't see Gene Lamont getting this kind of attention, and certainly not Torey Lovullo. Is that a connection to how the decision will be made?

I can't say I feel strongly at this point. I resisted Valentine at first, but I'm starting to talk myself into him because of the likelihood of him being hired. Maybe there's something to the "hire a well-known name" theory with a veteran team. Maybe his time away from the game has given him renewed energy and a different perspective. Maybe his failures with the Mets in '02 will give him unique insight into what happened with the Sox in '11, and also allow him to figure out how to right the ship.
