According to various reports this week, the Red Sox didn't give up on their pursuit of John Farrell after the Toronto Blue Jays amended their team policy to prevent him from interviewing with his old team.
The Blue Jays simply demanded a steep price: Clay Buchholz, according to David Waldstein of the New York Times. That ended the Red Sox pursuit.

There it is. The Jays didn't change their policy just because they love Farrell that much, they wanted something in return. When they couldn't get Buchholz, they said screw it, we're changing our policy and you will never get your beloved Farrell back to fix your dysfunctional clubhouse.
Is Buchholz really that valuable to the Sox? It is obvious he is, and there are few people who will argue. Sure John Farrell would have been a perfect fit to run this ball club, but the effect of loosing a quality starting pitcher would outweigh the positive of a good manager.
