CHARLIE MORTON RUMORS

2012 Fantasy Baseball: The Pittsburgh Pirates starting rotation preview

Jeff Karstens (credits below) The Pirates always seem to have a pitcher or two you can find in the bargain bin who turns out to have fantasy value.James McDonald and Paul Maholm are among the pitchers who have posted good fantasy numbers on a bad Pirates team in the past few years.Last year, it was Charlie Morton and Jeff Karstens who rewarded those fantasy owners who likely took...

A new WHYGAVS Poll!

A funny thing happened on Monday night: I wrote the Charlie Morton post and since it was the first post of substantial length I've written in months, all of a sudden everyone realized that I hadn't changed the WHYGAVS Poll over since June. It's about time to start updating the poll again, particularly because I'm always interested in where the WHYGAVS readership stands...

Charlie Morton and his varying approaches to right-handed and left-handed hitters

After a very strong start to 2011, Charlie Morton started to come back to earth quite as the summer wore on. There are plenty of ways to explain how this happened -- his peripherals caught up with him, hitters got used to his new delivery and changed repertoire, etc. -- but perhaps none is as compelling as the most obvious. After a couple of months, clubs figured out that Morton...

Here's a way to waste your whole weekend

Over at The Hardball Times, Dan Brooks writes about the inherent problems with PitchFX and how he managed to solve some of them with Harry Pavlidis and Lucas Apostoleris: by hand-tagging each of the 3.5 million pitches thrown since PitchFX was instituted in Major League ballparks. The result is these amazing player cards, which include tons of data sortable just about any way you...

Morton and Hanrahan Avoid Arbitration

Joel Hanrahan and Charlie Morton both got deals to avoid arbitration today. Hanrahan, who made $1.4 million last year, was due for a big raise after coming off a season where he made the National League All-Star team and saved 40 games, a career-high. He struck out 61 batters in 68 and 2/3 innings and had a 1.83 ERA. Morton will be receiving $2.445 million this season, but is not...

Pirates Avoid Arbitration With Charlie Morton

The Pirates have avoided arbitration with starting pitcher Charlie Morton by signing him to a one-year deal worth $2.45 million. If Morton plays at the level he did for most of last year, he is going to be one of the most underpaid pitchers in the league, which is great news for Pirates management.

Pirates, Hanrahan, Morton avoid arbitration

The Pirates agreed to terms on a 1-year deal with closer Joel Hanrahan and starter Charlie Morton. Both players are entering their 1st season of arbitration eligibility. Hanrahan’s deal is worth $4.1 million after a stellar season where he posted a 1.83 ERA over 68 2/3 innings. He racked up 40 saves in 44 opportunities. His K/9 dipped down to 8.0 from 12.9 in 2010, so that will...

Charlie Morton undergoes successful surgery

Kristy Robinson hit us with some news this afternoon from her Twitter account that we weren’t aware of. Charlie Morton underwent successful surgery on left hip to repair a torn labrum that began to bother Morton late in the 2011 season. Robinson goes on to add that the approximate recovery time for Morton is 6 months, which means he could very well miss the start of the 2012 season...

Charlie Morton Out Six Months After Hip Surgery

Pittsburgh Pirates right handed pitcher Charlie Morton had successful surgery today to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.  The recovery time for such a surgery is six months, which should put Morton out until about the middle of April.  The injury affected Morton throughout the season, especially toward the end of the year, and the team decided that the best course of action...
