Baseball America has released their pre-season top 100 draft prospects today, complete with scouting reports for each player. The Pirates will have four to five picks in the top 100, depending on whether Derrek Lee signs with another team or opts for retirement.

Pirates could have Central’s No. 2 1B in D-Lee
With Albert Pujols now in Kardashian territory, and Prince Fielder likely to be the next player to show up in an Eminem song, the Reds’ Joey Votto is the obvious choice for the best first baseman in the NL Central.
Sure the Cardinals brought in Lance Berkman and the Astros have Carlos Lee, and the Brewers and Cubs have unproven no-names Mat Gamel and Bryan LaHair respectively,...

Pirates Unlikely to See a First Base Upgrade
Two pieces of news recently came out which point to the Pittsburgh Pirates missing out on a chance to land a first base upgrade. First was the talk that Derrek Lee might opt for retirement if he doesn’t get the right deal between now and Spring Training. Lee remains unsigned, and isn’t open to returning to the Pirates, who want to bring him back. The second news was the...

Friday links: Blackout Policy, Derrek Lee, and more
If you, like me, live outside of an MLB market and were hoping that Major League Baseball would revise its blackout policy to make it possible for you to actually be able to watch games involving all 30 teams, you'll be disappointed this morning to see that Maury Brown is reporting that the policy will remain in effect for 2012. In my case, this means that I can never, ever watch...

Pirates Still Interested in Derrek Lee
The Pittsburgh Pirates are still interested in Derrek Lee for first base, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Lee was offered arbitration last month, but turned down that offer a week ago to pursue free agency. He is believed to be waiting for the top options on the board to sign, hoping that will improve his market. Albert Pujols signed last week with the Los Angeles Angels, which...

Pirates Offer Arbitration to Derrek Lee
The Pittsburgh Pirates have offered arbitration to free agent first baseman Derrek Lee, and have declined arbitration offers to catcher Chris Snyder and outfielder Ryan Ludwick.
If Lee accepts arbitration, the Pirates will have him under contract for the 2012 season, with his arbitration price likely being a raise over his $8.5 M total compensation in 2011. If he declines, the...

Sore hand sends Pirates 1B Lee back to bench
Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Derrek Lee was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against Pittsburgh with lingering soreness in his hand.
Lee had sat out four games after he was hit by a pitch in the hand. He returned to the lineup Monday and had a hit in each of the last two games.

Derrek Lee Flying Solo | Cubs 5 Pirates 3
Derrek Lee had a monstrous Pirates debut. The 2nd newest Pirate hit 2 home runs and drove in all 3 of the Pirates runs, but got no support from the rest of his offense and the Pirates lost their 4th straight game. Lee hit a solo home run in the 4th and then a 2-run shot in the 8th. The pitching wasn't as good as the Pirates would have liked, as starter Paul Maholm gave up 4...
