Player Profile #70: James Shields | SP | TB
On March 1 of last season I wrote a post called “6 Reasons Why You Should Draft James Shields.” At the time of that post’s writing, Shields had an ADP of 209. After a stunning turnaround last season, Shields now has an ADP of 68. He’s not without his concerns entering this season, but so much of what Shields did last season is completely repeatable, and that...

Can James Shields duplicate 2011 in 2012?
“Complete game James” had a career year in 2011 with a 16-12 record, 225K’s, 2.82 ERA, 11 complete games in 249.1 innings pitched. Since 2006, Shields has average 204 IP per season, and in 2011 he saw his largest year to year innings increase in his career with 46 additional frames (excluding his rookie year). So can James possibly get better than his 2011 performance?...

The One Where We Discuss Shields’ Heiny, More Damon Suitors, And Navi’s New Home
Off-Season (click image for random Wikipedia page)
The Rays 2011 All-Stars, David Price, James Shields, and Matt Joyce, have been named the grand marshalls for the 2012 Gasparilla parade on January 28.
Speaking of Shields…Does anybody in baseball have a more intimidating ass? If we were on first base when Shields went into his stretch, we’d be scared.
Just sayin’...

James Shields Player Projection No. 94
Key Stats: The player they nicknamed Big Game comes away from the 2011 season finally haveing some luck on his side. He set career bests in ERA (2.82), Wins (16), strikeout % (23.1%) and opponents AVG (.215). He cut his ERA nearly in half from 2010 despite advanced ERA measurements that were similar from the year before (xFIP, SIERA). Shields finished in the Top 10 in all of baseball...

Reds and Rays Talking Trade: James Shields?
The Reds and the Rays were caught discussing a potential trade according to the MLB Network. Unfortunately, players weren’t disclosed so it could have been a ton of different guys. My first thought? James Shields.
The Reds don’t have a ton of pitching, but have a ton of players they could give up to get it. The deal they would want to make will be around Yonder Alonso as they...

According to Bill Chastain, the Royals have asked the Rays what it would take to land James Shields in a trade. The answer was “a lot”…
The Royals are interested in [James] Shields, but to get him, the Rays want closer Joakim Soria, top position prospect Wil Myers and shortstop/second baseman prospect Christian Colon in return
We are still waiting to hear if the...

Will the Rays Trade James Shields?
One of the best pitchers available this off-season may have just been pulled off the market. With Matt Moore expected to grab a spot in the rotation, many expected James Shields to be available this off-season. That may no longer be the case, however, as CBS Sports’ Danny Knobler reported the Tampa Bay Rays are “dead-set against trading Shields.” While the Rays could choose...

Rays pick up options on Shields, Farnsworth, decline on Shoppach
The Rays decided to exercise their options on ace James Shields and closer Kyle Farnsworth while declining their option on catcher Kelly Shoppach.
Shields’ option was worth 7.5 million dollars. That is a somewhat steep price by the Rays’ standards, but Shields was their best pitcher in 2011 and they could be picking up his option just to trade him. It seemed to be a foregone...

Q&A: Jim Hickey on James Shields
James Shields has had a career year, and at least some of the credit goes to Jim Hickey. The Rays pitching coach has played a hands-on role in the right-hander’s success, which has been fueled, in part, by adjustments to his pitch selection. Hickey sat down to discuss those changes, as well as Shields’ BABiP and complete games, earlier this month.
Rays manager Joe Maddon also...
