This Date in Pirates History: January 6
Just like yesterday there are no major transactions on this particular date or big time player with birthdays so the lesser known players take the spotlight starting with a couple recent pitchers.
Jimmy Barthmaier(1984) Pitcher for the 2008 Pirates. He was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2003 and pitched for them in the minors until the Pirates selected him off waivers in November...

Pirates release Jimmy Barthmaier
The Pittsburgh Pirates have released right handed pitcher Jimmy Barthmaier, according to Rob Biertempfel. Barthmaier had been pitching in AA this season, returning from Tommy John surgery.
In his career at AAA prior to the injury, Barthmaier had put up a 3.53 ERA in 79 innings over 17 starts, with an 8.1 K/9 and a 3.3 BB/9 ratio. In his time with AA this year, Barthmaier really...

WHYGAVS Night 2009
OK, let's make this concrete. WHYGAVS Night 2009 will be on Friday, June 12th as the Pirates play the Tigers. Like last year, it's just easier if everyone's responsible for their own tickets. We chose a similar game (Friday night, interleague, bobblehead) for WHYGAVS Night last year and had no problem getting bleacher general admission tickets for everyone that showed...

The battle at the bottom
It seems like I'm starting these posts off with a transaction note every single day now. Today the Bucs claimed Steven Jackson from the Yankees and released Jimmy Barthmaier to make room on the 40-man. Jackson's old for his level, but putting up some great numbers in AAA right now and may be able to provide some bullpen help in the near-to-immediate future.
The Bucs go to...

A Saturday afternoon game
No idea why the Pirates and Mets are playing at 1:10 today, but they are and that means I can't watch them. Paul Maholm looks to make some headway after his last good start was wasted against the Brewers and he'll go against John Maine, who's off to a pretty rough start this year. Both today and tomorrow are pretty favorable pitching matchups for us, so hopefully we can...

Pedro Alvarez to Lynchburg plus seven other cuts
The Bucs pared down their roster a bit more today, with Pedro Alvarez being sent to Lynchburg as the headliner. There's a cautionary message from Neal Huntington about Pedro staying in shape, but Lynchburg was always the highest level that was said to be an option for him, so I think it's safe to say that he did enough between mini-camp and spring training to atone for his...

Bucs Win!
To be honest, I didn't pay much attention to this one. The game wasn't on TV so I just checked in on the internet every once in a while.-Barthmaier didn't pitch badly but only lasted 3 innings (2 runs). His pitch count was running a bit high and he hasn't pitched in awhile, so I guess that makes sense.-The offense put together lots of hits off Brian Moehler, who lasted...

GameDay #155 vs. Astros
Astros (81-72) at Pirates (64-90)7:05--PNC Park, PittsburghBrian Moehler (11-7, 4.33) vs. Jimmy Barthmaier (0-1, 27.00)[Preview]--------------Once again, the Pirates are playing second fiddle to college football (even though they're bringing in Lynyrd Skynyrd to sell tickets). Pitt beat Iowa today at Heinz Field, 21-20.-Don't panic at Jimmy B's ERA. He started one game...
