This Date in Pirates History: December 14
On this date in 1998 the Pittsburgh Pirates traded pitcher Jon Lieber to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for outfielder Brant Brown. Lieber started his career with the Pirates in 1994 and went 38-47 4.36 in 151 games, 104 as a starter. He was 8-14 4.11 for the Pirates in 1998. Brown was in his third season with the Cubs in 1998 but at age 27 it was his first full season. He hit .291...

Phillies Latest Team to Discover -- They Have Discovered It Haven't They? -- that Chan Ho Park is Not a Major League Starter
It's almost as if the Phillies feel they have to have at least one starting pitcher per season that either sinks or nearly sinks their season. A couple of years ago it was Paul Abbott, another year it was Vicente Padilla, then for a time it was Jon Lieber, then finally,...

Pitchers and Catchers: Battle of the bulge begins
Some call "Pitchers & Catchers" glorified jogging and stretching. Others say it serves the same symbolic purpose as Groundhog Day. On Beerleaguer, it's time to see who got fat and draw shallow conclusions. Every season since I've been doing this, there's been at least one spring training debate over size and fitness. In fact, entire careers in Philadelphia - including that of...

Ben Sheets Work Comp Case
Free agent Ben Sheets is hurt and he has a torn flexor tendon origin at the elbow. The injury happened last August, he tried to play thru the injury and his last Brewer appearance was 2.1 IP against the Cubs on Sept 27th. Missing the playoffs after 8 seasons as the Brewer ace plus being in a free agent year must have been nearly as painful as his elbow. Yet circumstances of...

Friday: Readers drop the hammer on Blanton deal
Generally, the Beerleaguer peanut gallery disapproves of the Phillies' decision to trade for right-hander Joe Blanton. Have they underestimated the overall impact of this deal? "Essentially Blanton has much more in common with Jon Lieber than the girth. He strikes me as being more or less the same pitcher. Gives up a ton of hits, pitches deep into the game. Flattering comparisons...

Even 5-year old lefties can hit .300 off Jon Lieber
Jon Lieber's not getting a lot of playing time this season with the Cubs … he's only pitched 37.1 innings in 21 appearances (20 out of the bullpen for a 1.78 ERA and a 2-2 record - don't ask about that one start).
Because of that, there's speculation that the 38 year old Lieber might [...]

Jon Leiber Signs with the Cubs: The Fantasy Impact
The only thing holding back Lieber from being a useful fantasy pitcher is how healthy he is going into 2008. Lieber is usually a helpful pitcher in terms of ERA, WHIP, W's, and even some K's (though he's not really known for strikeouts). This is mostly attributed to his excellent control. He owns a career Ctl of 1.73, and even last season, when he only pitched 78 innings and posted...

Jon Lieber to the Mets?
According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, free agent hurler Jon Lieber is garnering interest from the Royals, Astros, Reds, Mets, and Rangers. Lieber is expected to be ready for Spring Training after a foot injury.
Might be worth the risk, however I don't think he fits the type of player that Omar is looking for.

Lieber, Rowand Rumors Run Rampant
Chicago White Sox GM Ken Williams still has Aaron Rowand in his sights. The rumored deal would have left handed middle relief prospect Boone Logan headed to Philadelphia.
The Phillies are also trying to build interest in Jon Lieber, who doesn't have a rotation spot at the moment. Their target? The Blue Jays and OF Alex Rios. No word on whether the Jays have any interest...
