A's take new approach to Michael Wuertz's injury
PHOENIX - Last spring, Michael Wuertz had tendinitis in his right shoulder, but he pitched through it and wasn't shut down until mid-March. This week, Wuertz felt a similar twinge, as he said he always does during the...

Anderson, Wuertz shut down K.C.
The usual Brett Anderson was back Wednesday at the Coliseum, and the nasty Michael Wuertz of last year was very much in action. Anderson, shaking off the rust in his second start off the disabled list, wobbled a bit in the first inning against Kansas City,...

Boston Red Sox have Oakland Athletics RHP Michael Wuertz on their wish list
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe says the Red Sox have Oakland A’s right-handed pitcher Michael Wuertz on their wish list.
The Red Sox are in search of relief pitching. Their latest target is Toronto Blue Jays’ left-handed pitcher Scott Downs, but they are in a “nose-to-nose” competition with the New York Yankees on the left-hander.
A’s GM Billy Beane...

Yanks Keeping an Eye on Michael Wuertz
From George A. King III:With the prospects of reliever Alfredo Aceves (back) not returning this year getting smaller and Chan Ho Park struggling, the Yankees are monitoring what the A's do with Michael Wuertz, a right-handed, slider-throwing freak. The A's aren't hot to deal him but if they do, the Yankees and other teams will be interested. Wuertz, who was outstanding...

Oakland Clears Arbitration
The Oakland Athletics cleared their arbitration calendar with a multi-year deal for Michael Wuertz:
The right-hander will earn $2.2 million this year, $2.8 million next year, and the A’s hold a $3.5 million option for 2012, with a buyout of $250,000.
That option year covers what would have been Wuertz’s first year of free agency, which really [...]

Revisiting Relievers The Cubs Could Have Had Since They Already Had Them: Michael Wuertz
Wuertz ranks 12th in FIP (2.62) among all relievers with 30 or more innings pitched. He has a 4.4 K/BB ratio, which would be the best on the Cubs by quite a bit. It’s actually embarrassing to say who leads the Cubs relievers in K/BB ratio. Luis Vizcaino at 3 and he was gone early on. Kevin Gregg is next at 2.43.
The Cubs got Justin Sellers and some other guy I can’...

Cubs Sign German, Send Five to Minor League Camp
Apparently unhappy with what they've seen so far from Luis Rivas, the Cubs have signed 30-year old super-sub IF-OF Esteban German to a minor league contract, with an NRI to Spring Training. German was released by the Kansas City Royals last Friday.
In 388 MLB games (with OAK, TEX, and mostly KC), German has played 2B-3B-SS-LF-CF, and even has gone behind the plate on ocacasion...

Scouting Report on Rocky Cherry
In this installment of Cubshub's Scouting Report, we'll look at the spring suprise in power righty Rocky Cherry. I wasn't planning on Cherry's promotion to beat his scouting report but with the way our pitching has been, the extra arm was needed. Entering the 2006 season, 39 of 48 Cherry's career appearances were as a starting pitcher. But following Tommy John...
