MIKE BAXTER RUMORS & GOSSIP

Mets Notes: Mike Baxter, Dillon Gee and the prospect/blogger

Now that Rick Ankiel has re-signed with the Nationals, the Mets have to turn their attention elsewhere for a player to compete for their fifth outfielder slot. Now attention will shift to even older veterans like Johnny Damon and Raul Ibanez. Here’s an idea: Quit worrying and just give the job to Mike Baxter. Now, you may be fine with the idea of having an internal candidate...

Baxter and Loewen could be the bench...

Photo by Michael BaronWe've heard all off-season that the Mets are looking for at least a 4th and maybe a 5th outfielder on the free agent market.  But as the financial situation has become bleaker, where they went with Quintanilla as the back-up short stop because the cost of a Jack Wilson/Ronny Cedano/Ryan Theriot was too prohibitive there is the distinct possibility that one...

Mets Re-Sign Queens Native, Mike Baxter

After being non-tendered on Monday evening to make room on the 40-man roster for free-agent acquisition Jon Rauch, outfielder Mike Baxter is back with organization. The Mets announced that Baxter has agreed to a minor-league deal to remain with the club and also received an invitation to spring training. The Queens native batted .235 in 22 games for the Mets last season.

A look at Mike Baxter’s chances in 2012

One of the essential things to think about in the offseason is how the roster for the following year will shake out. We’ve done it here at 360, both in terms of Rule 5 purposes and to see how the projected budget might shape the team. One guy who hasn’t received a lot of discussion is outfielder Mike Baxter. Our own Chris Walendin expects Baxter to keep his spot on the 40...

Mike Baxter’s RBI double made me smile

I love this story… Before yesterday’s game, the Mets promoted 26-year-old OF-1B Mike Baxter, who was born in Queens, where he helped lead Archbishop Molloy to the city championship at Shea Stadium in 2002. He later played college baseball at Columbia and Vanderbilt and was eventually drafted by the Padres, with whom he had eight at bats last season. However, last night...

Call-Ups or Hang-Ups: San Diego Padres and Mike Baxter

Once again it is collaborative post time here on Call to the Pen. This month’s topic is September call-ups. To get the ball rolling, I posed the following question to each of our Lead Writers, “Which player do you want your team to call-up in September and why?” It is a simple question but I think you will find the responses to be very diverse. Taking the path less traveled...

Baxter’s Bat Cooling Off

Triple-A outfielder Mike Baxter batted .360/.500/.500 in April, and it looked like the 25-year-old might catch a break. With Kyle Blanks struggling to hit for half of Baxter’s average in the majors, there was a possibility the two could switch levels at some point soon. Alas, while Blanks continues to slump, Baxter has begun to fall off as well. He’s hitting a weak .132...

Where Does Mike Baxter Fall on the Quad-A Spectrum?

I’m not much for biases in baseball, or at least I try not to be, but I do openly admit to one: I love Quad-A players. Guys who dominate in Triple-A for an extended period of time deserve an extended major league look, scouting reports be damned, if you ask me. Now, I want to be clear here, though: Quadruple-A does exist, in two senses. First, there have been plenty of players...
