NEAL COTTS RUMORS & GOSSIP

One Cut, One Signed

The Yankees made a couple minor moves yesterday. They cut left-hander reliever Neal Cotts, who, according to Marc Carig, "wasn't over his injury issues" after having Tommy John surgery last year. The Yankees also signed right-hander reliever Fernando Hernandez to a minor-league deal. The 26-year-old went 5-6 with a 4.77 ERA in 45 games (4 starts) for Oakland's Triple-A affiliate...

Yankees Release Neal Cotts, Sign Fernando Hernandez

The Yankees made a couple of minor moves this morning as they released LHP Neal Cotts and signed RHP Fernando Hernandez. Cotts, 31 in March, was one of the few lefties that the Yankees signed to try out in camp. Unfortunately he hasn’t gotten past the injuries he’s dealt with in the past as he failed his physical that...

Yankees Sign LHPs Neal Cotts and Daniel Martinez

The Yankees are looking to sign another lefty reliever for their bullpen to go alongside Boone Logan this year, but like any smart team they know signing a good reliever is like catching lightning in a bottle. So they are stockpiling backup options. The Yankees have signed LHP Neal Cotts and Daniel Martinez, according to a pair of...

Cotts a Pirate, Eye Patch and Parrot Remain With Cubs

Neal Cotts has signed a minor league contract with the Pirates. Funny, I can't find this anywhere on the Cubs website, you think good news like this would be the first thing they would want us all to know. Huh?

According to a report from the Tribune, Neal Cotts had season-ending Tommy John Surgery on Thursday. Dr. Timothy Kremcheck performed the operation in Cincinnati.

Best Stuff of the Cubs vs Pirates

With the Dodgers coming in for four, and the roster refreshed, the Cubs managed to take two out of three against the Pirates. Bottom line, the Cubs out pitched the Pirates. Using "run values", I've rated all the pitches thrown in the series. Run values should add up to zero across a league-season, but my math is not quite right. I'm off about one run every 2500 pitches for 2009...

Cotts vs. Waddell - Lesser of Two Evils?

The issue with Neal Cotts was his control, so he got optioned to Iowa. Jason Waddell gets his first shot at the bigs, despite a history of control issues of his own. To compare the two lefties, I'll use Minor League Equivalents (MLE) for Waddell and MLB stats for Cotts. Career numbers in both cases.I start with the Lefty-Righty match-up. From the little I've seen of Waddell,...

Cubs 2-6 Giants: Marshall good, Lincecum better

I didn’t see but the tail end of this game.  Marshall allowed 3 runs in the 1st and then settled down and shut the Giants down until the 8th.  He allowed 2 quick hits to open the 8th and Lou, clearly not interested in winning this game, brought in the team’s worst reliever who gave up about 35 hits and retired one batter.  Neal Cotts replaced Samardzija with the bases loaded...

Ruhlman Promoted - Should Cotts Take Notice?

The Cubs promoted lefty reliever Jayson Ruhlman to Iowa on Saturday. Drafted in 2006 out of Central Michigan, Ruhlman got off to a fast start in Boise. As he's moved up (one year at Low-A and High-A) his numbers have dipped a little. It took just 6.3 innings in Double-A for Ruhlman to get the call to Iowa. Ruhlman joined fellow lefties J.R. Mathes and Jason Waddell in the I-Cubs...

So what if Neal Cotts is the only LOOGY?

There’s been some discussion this offseason and this spring about who the Cubs LOOGY will be. We’ve had the discussions on here. I was hopeful the Cubs would acquire one of Beimel, Shouse or Ohman in the offseason. Neal Cotts isn’t that good a pitcher and you could probably improve over him. That being said, we’re talking about 50 or so innings of work so the importance...
