Thoughts on Nick Johnson and Yoenis Cespedes; Other Stuff
Yesterday, the Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles were on the verge to signing first baseman Nick Johnson to a minor league deal. Well, this deal is another in a good amount of 'value' or 'bargain-bin' contracts that Dan Duquette has offered to veterans and minor league free agents this season.>>> Read More

Orioles interested in Nick Johnson
The Baltimore Orioles are reportedly interested in signing former Major League first baseman Nick Johnson to a minor league contract. Johnson was at one time the top prospect in the Yankees farm system. He never reached the lofty expectations of others but did have several solid seasons for the Washington Nationals. Johnson has battled injuries throughout his career. He missed...

Cleveland Indians Sign On-Base Machine Nick Johnson
The Cleveland Indians have agreed to a minor league deal with free agent first baseman Nick Johnson.
Johnson, 32, is an absolute on-base machine when healthy. He has a .401 career OBP and got on base at a .426 clip in 2009. Over the last three seasons he’s posted a 19 percent walk rate, including 24 free passes in as many games last year with the New York Yankees.
The key there...

Yankees Rumors: Cubs Looking Into Nick Johnson
Via the Chicago Sun-Times:
With a payroll budget that figures to leave little room for big-shot free agents, indications are that general manager Jim Hendry is focusing more on the likes of lefty-hitting Nick Johnson — if the medicals look good enough — for first base and is keeping an eye on former Cub Kerry Wood‘s status for a possible bullpen job.

Heyman: Yanks not sure if Johnson will return this year
Via Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, we learn that the Yankees are currently unsure as to whether or not Nick Johnson, signed in the offseason to be the team’s DH, will be to return this season. This, of course, isn’t a surprise when you consider Johnson’s checkered health history. Heyman goes on to add that the Yankees will search for another hitter as a result, presumably...

Nick Johnson exits game with sore wrist
In the 5th inning of today’s game, which is still underway, Marcus Thames pinch-hit for the Yankees’ designated hitter, Nick Johnson. In the 6th inning, we learned that Johnson had been pulled due to a “sore right wrist.” Now, this could be a big problem for the Yankees given that Johnson played in 38 games in 2008, only to miss the rest of the season after tearing a tendon...

Nick Johnson out until Tuesday
It appears Nick Johnson’s lower back stiffness, which was reportedly brought on by participating in extra batting practice, will keep him sidelined until Tuesday (the Yankees have an off-day tomorrow). Johnson was expected to play today, however, it appears the Yankees are being cautious with him, as that is the safest strategy given his well-documented inclination for injuries...

Can Nick Johnson Ever Really Slump?
I think I’ve probably visited Nick Johnson’s baseball reference page 100 times already this season. It’s really a thing of beauty. We all knew he would walk a lot, but I’m not sure anyone predicted what he’s done so far. Going into Thursday’s game, he has a league-leading 18 walks. We’re nearing the end of April and the Houston Astros...

Nick Johnson not swinging at strikes
Over the weekend, MJ Recanati of Was Watching pondered Nick Johnson’s plate selectivity. Currently, to start the season, Johnson is hitting .158/.407/.286, causing some concern that the patient DH might be acting passively, rather than using his eagle eye to setup advantageous hitting counts. In MJ’s piece, he noted that Johnson was seeing an “extremely high percentage of fastballs”...
