2012 Fantasy Baseball: The Pittsburgh Pirates starting rotation preview
Jeff Karstens (credits below) The Pirates always seem to have a pitcher or two you can find in the bargain bin who turns out to have fantasy value.James McDonald and Paul Maholm are among the pitchers who have posted good fantasy numbers on a bad Pirates team in the past few years.Last year, it was Charlie Morton and Jeff Karstens who rewarded those fantasy owners who likely took...

Bucs wanted Bedard instead of Maholm
When Paul Maholm signed with the Cubs as a free agent for one year and $4.75 million last week, many Pittsburgh fans wondered why the Pirates didn't step up to keep maybe the most consistent starting pitcher they've had in the past decade.

Maholm, Chen sign, pitching pool grows smaller
As expected, Paul Maholm signed a one-year deal with the Cubs with an option for 2013. It's worth $4.25 million, which is a nice value for the Cubs and certainly a price I wouldn't have argued with had he signed the deal with the Pirates. The other pitching news today is that the Orioles signed Taiwanese lefty We-Yi Chen to a three-year deal. The Pirates showed at least passing...

So much for Maholm’s veteran leadership, signs with Cubs
It was pretty clear that Paul Maholm’s services were no longer needed wanted by the Pirates when they decided not to re-up the lefty’s contract a few months back.
They did stir up talks again with the 29-year-old free agent about staying in the Burgh but nothing ever materialized. Maholm love this city and said numerous times that he wanted to remain with the team and...

The deal announced Tuesday includes a club option for 2013.
The 29-year-old Maholm was limited by a left shoulder strain last season with Pittsburgh and made 26 starts, going 6-14 despite a 3.66 ERA. He was 53-73 over seven seasons with the Pirates...

Paul Maholm Officially Coming To The Chicago Cubs
It was reported a few weeks ago that the Cubs were in talks with free agent lefty Paul Maholm as a cheap option to add to the starting rotation.
Now, it looks as if that is finally set to happen. Early reports trickled out that the Cubs and Maholm were “close” to agreeing to a contract, and according to Maholm’s Twitter account (which is verified) he is set to join the Cubs...

Chicago Cubs, Maholm close on deal
The Cubs, continuing to rework their starting rotation, are close to signing free-agent left-hander Paul Maholm, according to a major-league source.
Maholm, 29, went 6-14 with a 3.66 ERA for the Pirates last season, ending the year on the DL with shoulder trouble. The Pirates paid him a $750,000 buyout rather than exercise his $9.75 million option.
The Cubs have dramatically overhauled...

Pirates talking to Paul Maholm
Dejan Kovacevic is reporting this morning that the Pirates have "had talks" with Paul Maholm about a return to Pittsburgh, but that any such scenario is pretty "unlikely." I don't think that there's really anything too surprising about that report: bringing Maholm back makes sense to me in the same way that signing Jeff Francis would, and you can argue...

Free Agent Rumors: Paul Maholm, Dan Wheeler
Two Pittsburgh Pirates free agent rumors, after a few weeks of little to no news:
-Dejan Kovacevic reports that the Pirates have had discussions with Paul Maholm, although a return seems unlikely. Kovacevic mentions that the Pirates are looking to upgrade the rotation, but that those additions will probably come from non-roster invitees, rather than a high profile addition. We heard...
