This Day In Red Sox History: April 13, 1997
The Red Sox unveiled their new mascot, “Wally The Green Monster”, at “Kids Opening Day”.
The initial fan reaction was very negative, with a cascade of loud boos rolling from the stands. Eventually, thanks in large part to the efforts of Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, Wally became accepted and beloved by the Red Sox fan base.
