This Date in Pirates History: February 20
There have been six former Pittsburgh Pirates born on this date but before I get into them there is a new player signed as a free agent in December 2011 who celebrates his birthday today. Catcher Jose Morales turns 29 today. He spent all of last season with the Colorado Rockies, hitting .267 in 22 games before injuring his hand in mid-June and missing the rest of the season. The...

Hernandez, Kensing, Morales — Contract Data
As per Jenifer Langosch, Anderson Hernandez will make $500K, Jose Morales will make $650K, and Logan Kensing will make $675K if they make the major league roster. With the recently passed Collective Bargaining Agreement, the major league minimum salary will be $480K in 2012 so none of these deals are significantly above minimum.
Morales also has a clause that he can ask for his...

Power Rankings: The Pirates' Cookie-Cutter Catchers
With the addition of Jose Morales, the Pirates currently have a hilarious six catchers that are somewhere between the Majors and Triple-A, not counting actual prospect Tony Sanchez. They are, in alphabetical order, Rod Barajas, Jake Fox, Eric Fryer, Jason Jaramillo, Mike McKenry, Morales, and Wyatt Toregas. I have never seen such an acumulation of mediocre-to-sub-par catching talent...

Wednesday morning winter meetings update: Erik Bedard, Jose Morales
While all of the baseball world had their eyes glued on Albert Pujols last night, the Pirates kept doing their own thing virtually undected by the rest of the baseball world. The best news, I thought, to come out of last night was Nick Cafardo's tweet that the Pirates are interested in Erik Bedard. Bedard is exactly the sort of high-risk/high-reward starter I want to see the...

The Pittsburgh Pirates are close to a deal with catcher/first baseman Jose Morales, according to Ken Rosenthal. The deal would likely be of the minor league variety. Morales has 218 career at-bats in the majors, mostly with the Minnesota Twins. In that time he has a .289/.365/.344 line. In his career at AAA he has a .304/.367/.405 line in 1049 at-bats. Morales has thrown out 34...
