The Anatomy of Forrest Griffin's upset victory over Rampage Jackson

Overview :

Forrest Griffin displayed in his UFC 86 fight against Rampage Jackson that by fighting with a superior, disciplined battle plan designed to weaken his component's core and utilize his own strengths, an underdog can defeat a heavy favorite.

Basically, Forrest Griffin masterfully executed his game plan of the following components to overcome Rampage Jackson via unanimous decision :

1. Leg kicks to shake Rampage's foundation :

Every man's base are his legs, and even if you're a beast like Rampage, if you don't have your legs, your chances of winning are reduced dramatically. From the opening bell, Forrest Griffin went after Jackson's legs. Although, he had been knocked down by Jackson in the first round, Griffin's persistent leg-kicking had Rampage wobbly by the end of the round.

In Round 2, Griffin unleashed his leg kicks full force, and his pain infliction on Rampage enabled him to take Rampage Jackson. He went for the standing guillotine choke, but when that didn't work, he went on top of Rampage, gained full mount and gave Rampage a steady dose of short range elbows, and almost submitted him.

2. A disciplined boxing game :

The leg kicks allowed Forrest Griffin to take Rampage Jackson out of his game plan, but it was the boxing that allowed Griffin to give Rampage a steady dose of the leg kicks. Griffin continually pressed the action with his constant movement and one-twos.

The combination of the pain in his legs and the chaos created by the constant movement and left-rights messed with Rampage's head and totally took Rampage out of the fight psychologically. Rampage Jackson ended up displaying very little of his action style that he displayed in knocking out Chuck Liddell and beating Dan Henderson. Instead of zigzagging, Rampage moved mostly back and forth, and occasionally moved side to side. He was unable to sustain any kind of rhythm, and he displayed none of his range-traversing fluidity.

3. Paying attention to the details of groundfighting :

What sealed the deal for Forrest Griffin were the little details that he paid attention to in his grappling. Whenever he was taken down by Rampage, he clung to Rampage like a suction cup, so that Rampage could not pound him senseless. Also, in Round 4, when a failed triangle choke attempt from underneath could have turned him into another Ricardo Arona, he unbuckled Jackson's hold just in time so that he wouldn't be powerbombed full force.

Summary :

It is obvious from the way that Forrest Griffin fought that he thoroughly prepared himself to fight Rampage Jackson : Forrest shook Rampage's whole foundation with his painful leg kicks ; even though he knew he couldn't knock out Rampage with his hands, he never stopped moving his feet or throwing his one-twos.

In turn, his hands set up more leg kicks, and more pain for Rampage. Forrest did take some hard hits from Rampage, but he didn't take so many that he would lose the fight. Even when Rampage took Griffin to the ground via knockdowns or takedowns, he did whatever he could to neutralize Rampage's strength and position advantage by sticking to Rampage like glue.

Coming into the fight, Forrest Griffin had to fight the fight of his life to beat Rampage Jackson, who is as hot as any fighter in the UFC. Most people, myself included, didn't think Forrest would fight that fight, as chances of someone fighting that well aren't really high. But Forrest Griffin, just like he outgamed Shogun Rua, outdid Rampage Jackson, and is now the proud UFC light heavyweight champion!

An uneducated reasponse. Go learn the sport and the scoring system. Then open your mouth. Forrest deserved to win.

how can u say "his kicks and ground game were more damaging" jackson never looked like he was hurt nor had any marks, so how can u make that assumption? ur obviously a fan who saw what u wanted to see.

watch the rounds 4 and 5 and notice the discoloration on the outside of Rampage's left knee. It was glowing pink from the trauma. And when I say glowing, I mean GLOWING.

Like radioactive materials glow in movies and cartoons.

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO SAW THAT.

That statement is accurate becuase, Forrest took out rampage's leg early in the second round and then kept him on his back for the rest of the round. Moreover, Forrest seemed to have more Octogan control and was generally more aggressive. Even, in the end, when Rampage was throughing punches wildly, Forrest clinched him up and delivered those high knees until time expired.

WHAT HE SAW WAS SKILLS PUT TO WORK. OBVIOUSLY YOU SAW WHAT YOU WANTED TO SEE. SEND HIM A GET WELL CARD.

Forrest won. I dont care what people say. Dont be mad at him because he whooped Rampages ass. We all know. We all saw it. Sure it wasnt easy but he did it. Im glad Forrest won he deserves it. Dont get me wrong I like Rampage he is a good man and a great fighter but he lost and thats just how it is.

I agree.

I DIDNT THINK HE COULD DO IT. BE HE HE DID! I AGREE

R U on dope forrest lost and we all know it. You don't get knocked down ,slammed ,rocked, and blooded but win the the fight via leg kicks. You guys are still encouraging white guys to run around and not win but get a cheap desicion and play champion. I'm so sick of this and Rampage has to play the good house boy after the fight not to get in deep water with dana. Forrest got beat up bad he should ice that belt up and use it to bring down the swelling on his face, what a champ. UFC had a real champion that no one would argue but now it's just a matter of time till Forrest gets destroyed. And they have nerve enough to talk about the KIMBO fight you bunch of hypocrites. Rampage my man your still the champ and WE you know who, saw you whip that azz.

Here's why I think Forrest Griffin won :

1. He controlled the tempo of the fight. You can talk about the punches that Rampage landed all you want, but Rampage fought passively.

2. His low kicks and ground game were much more damaging than anything Rampage did to him. Even in the round that he clearly lost (Round 1), Forrest already had Rampage wobbling.

3. Forrest Griffin dominated the rounds that he won, especially Round 2. Rampage never had a round where he just dominated like that.

Fine Rampage lost. I don't agree with the decision. I thought, at best a draw. With that said, your reasons on why Forrest won are absolutely ridiculous.
"You can talk about the punches that Rampage landed all you want"? Are you kidding me. Yeah we can talk about them because they are very significant in how MMA is scored. Clear power punches that cause damage. That is a very significant point, you can't just blow that off.
"His low kicks and ground game were much more damaging than anything Rampage did to him" This is a first. Yeah maybe an overall reason why he dominated round 2, but there is no way that any leg kick any day is more damaging than a power punch to the head that connects. Sorry! Your whole #3 doesn't matter. That's not how MMA is scored. You win the round or you lose the round. End of story. The biggest debate in this fight is round 4 and 5. Rampage clearly won rd 4. Clearly!!!! Connected on Power punches, takedown, slam! What did Forrest do in round 4? Anyone? Anyone? Rd. five was very close not much action could have gone either way. The scoring in rd 4 is what is concerning as a fan of MMA. Simply put it's concerning!!!!!!

I say Griffin is the man, and IS the Champ and WE saw him whoop that azz.....even Rampage said it!!! one of his hype-boy's got in his ear and started talking trash, just like Bernard Hopkins when he got his azz whuped, but I guess when you run your mouth about not losing to "A White Boy" it hurts your ego. Good job Forrest, get ready for Chuck!!

THIS IS FOR WISDOM PEOPLE LIKE YOU ALWAYS WHAT TO MAKE A RACE CARD OUT NOTHING. YOUR MAN LOST FAIR AND SQUARE. DEAL WITH IT !! GROUND GAME AND KICKS DID HIS ASS IN. GREAT JOB FORREST
