UFC officials have quickly filled the injury void at UFC 153 with the announcement of three new bouts to the fight card.
UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will make the move up to light heavyweight to battle Stephan Bonnar in a three-round main event. The co-main event will feature Fabio Maldonado taking on Glover Teixeira. In addition, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira returns to action to face Dave Herman in a heavyweight showdown.
On Tuesday, UFC president Dana White announced that Jose Aldo and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson had suffered injuries which prevented them from competing at UFC 153. Aldo was set to defend his featherweight title against Frankie Edgar in the main event while Jackson was scheduled to meet Teixeira in the co-main event.
Silva, the long time middleweight champion, brings a thirteen fight winning streak into the bout against Bonnar. This will be the third time that Silva has competed at light heavyweight in the UFC. Both of the previous bouts ended with devastating first round knockout victories. He defeated James Irvin at UFC Fight Night 14 in 2008 and Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 in 2009.
Bonnar, the original Ultimate Fighter finalist, has won his last three outings. He last competed in November 2011 at UFC 139 where he earned a unanimous decision win over Kyle Kingsbury.
UFC 153 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 13. The main card also features Erick Silva vs. Jon Fitch, Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado and Demian Maia vs. Rick Story.
